Do I REALLY need to complete an Honors Project?

  • YES all students entering OSU AU22 and later must complete an Honors Project. Even if:
    • You petitioned to be on the legacy GE
    • You joined Honors after your first semester
    • You are pursuing a dual degree
  • The only students who currently do not need to do an HP:
    • Students in the Arts Honors Program
    • Students pursuing a single degree where your secondary college is ASC

The Honors Project

All Honors students will design, carry out, and deliver a project that is approved by the ASC Honors Committee. An Honors Project is a challenging, original project completed by a student’s final semester (or after thesis defense). In every case, the student must submit a proposal that must be approved by the ASC Honors Committee.

Project options include:

Honors thesis (will also graduate with honors research distinction)

Six (6) credit hours (or the equivalent) over at least two semesters of the following:

• Service-learning experience (S coursework)

• Research experience (4998H coursework)

• Internship (1191, 3191, 4193, or department equivalent)

• Coursework that results in a creative arts project (3191 or department equivalent)

• Global education experience/study abroad coursework

• Other projects as approved by the ASC Honors Committee

OR

Can combine multiple experiences

Hour/Credit Requirements

  • MUST span multiple semesters
    • Summer term counts
    • Semesters do not need to be consecutive

  • 3 credits (or ~150 hours) of involvement PER semester for 2+ semesters
    • Or equivalent

  • Academic credit preferred, but not required (except for thesis)

  • Need Supervisor/Mentor/etc. to confirm your hours & advise

Other Common Ideas

  • Shadowing
  • Volunteering/Community Service
  • Tutoring

  • Cannot be the majority of hours/experience
  • Will always require detailed petition statement
  • If doing project outside of our standard categories, need petition.

16 of 23

Combining Two+ Ideas

  • Unless doing a thesis, project MUST span multiple semesters.
    • Can be the same activity (research, internship, etc.) OR
    • Combine two+ different activities (study abroad and research, etc.)
  • Unless doing a thesis or two+ semesters of the EXACT SAME experience (research in same lab, two internships through same org), you are pursuing a combo project

  • If combining experiences
    • CANNOT happen during same semester
    • Must include statement of connectivity

in Benchmark submission

17 of 23

Petition Process(do this during B2 survey if possible)

  • For ALL combo projects and more abstract ideas
  • This is not as scary as it sounds!
  • Submit petition statement as part of Benchmark 2 submission
    • WHAT- What experience(s) do you want to do for your HP?
    • WHY- Why is this your preferred HP? Why is this important to you and your goals?
    • HOW- What specific program(s) are you pursuing? How will you track your hours? Who will supervise/mentor you?
    • COMBO- How do these two+ experiences relate (topic/purpose) to create one overarching HP idea?

Overlap Opportunities

CAN Overlap

  • Internship/research/service/ study abroad/thesis components of major/minor (if okay with major/minor advisor)

CANNOT Overlap

  • Stamps Eminence cohort project
  • General course requirements (Bio 1114 group project, Psych 4510/20 project as-is)
  • Graduate/advanced courses used for major hours
  • If HP/major/minor overlap is not okay with major/minor Advisor
