Spelling assistance vs spell check

What kind of support does the student need?

• Embedded spell check function? Turn on spell check on student TIDE profile
• Frequently misspelled words list? Leave spell check “off”, instead the student would have a non-embedded support (NES) checked off for the STAAR assessment in their TIDE profile

Spell check does not identify grammar or mechanical errors

Word prediction (Co:writer)

Co:Writer is a predictive text function; a list of potential words will appear for the student when they pause typing on the constructed response item

Text-to-Speech & Auto TTS

• Remember there are 2 forms of oral administration: Text-to-Speech and Auto Text-to-Speech

Auto Text-to-Speech

• Auto TTS give the student a 5 second countdown before the system engages and reads all allowable items to the student; during this oral delivery the student cannot stop the platform from reading
• As the allowable content is read the word will also be highlighted to help guide the student
• After the initial oral delivery, the student can re-engage the allowable content to be re-read by clicking the Speaker icon, located to the left of the hamburger dropdown as displayed above

Text-to-Speech

• TTS is utilized by the student on an as needed basis
• The student must initially engage the Speak function to read any allowable content
• After the initial oral delivery, the student can re-engage the allowable content to be re-read by clicking the Speaker icon, located to the left of the hamburger dropdown as displayed above

Text-to-Speech

• TTS is utilized by the student on an as needed basis
• The student must initially engage the Speak function to read any allowable content by clicking on the speaker icon and selecting either speak question or speak option

Text-to-Speech

• When the student “right mouse clicks” an additional selection box will appear, allowing the student to read only a selected answer option or a specific section of the allowable content

• STT is utilized on constructed response item types
• When the student is ready to dictate their response into the platform, they will select the microphone icon, as shown above, to turn on the microphone and can then begin talking into their microphone
• STT will not identify or autocorrect any grammar or mechanical usage errors; students must review their dictated response before submitting their exam and make any changes the student deems necessary

Frequently misspelled words List

• FMWL may be student-made, teacher-made, or commercially produced
• A simple Google search for frequently misspelled words list will produce a variety of potential lists the student may use
• This is not an embedded support, it is a a physical paper that will be provided to the student for state assessment use

• This is not an embedded support, it is a a physical paper that will be provided to the student for state assessment use
