Data management

WASH-GEM Introductory Training

Aspects of data management consider both storage and accuracy. We must strive to ensure that data is truthful and safe throughout data collection and analysis.

We recommend using KoBo Toolbox for data management. �KoBo Toolbox is a free and safe cloud-based tool.

The WASH-GEM recommends a cloud-based system to manage data

for increased privacy, reliable access and retrievability.

Non-cloud based systems such as filing cabinets or computers

can more easily be stolen, lost or destroyed.

When considering data accuracy, there are four aspects to think about:

Accuracy

Within Kobo Toolbox, the accuracy of data can be checked using

either the database or visual reporting format.

Within the database version, data managers can tag response approval

and edit responses as required.

Within the visual report version, data managers can quickly

explore themes, identify missing data and create printouts.

The first step is to check with enumerators that responses have been accurately

synced from the the data collection system into the cloud.

Next, check to see if any data is missing or seems incorrect.

This data can be tagged to help support clarification with the enumeration team

Once the data manager has checked for any inconsistencies, connect again with the enumerators to clarify any challenges. You may even need to make some phone calls.

Last, check to see that the identification codes are accurate and dyads are connected. Then remove all names and phone numbers from the database.
