Good morning. I am Jess Klein and this is Atul Varma and we are here to talk to you about the Mozilla and Learning Networks Hackasaurus project- and to secretly recruit you to help teens hack

JESS

We believe that hacker skills help teens to be productive in the 21st century and we are going to show you how Hackasaurus tools facilitate this. First, let us tell you about ourselves.

ATUL

My earliest memory of hacking is when my mom and I typed a short BASIC program to draw a triangle on a screen on our Atari 400. It made me realize that if I had the power to draw a triangle on a screen, I could actually *make* the video games that I normally just played.

JESS

These are some drawings I did as a teen. Mixing up crayon, paint, charcoal, ink and digital tools. Being flexible in our medium translated into real careers for us. Atul is a programmer at Mozilla and I am a designer at NYCLN

ATUL

When I started hacking on the Web in 2008, I learned something amazing about it: while I'd always thought a page was something that felt very static and boring, it was really more like magic ink.

A dynamic structure made up of standard parts that can be taken apart, remixed, and repurposed.

JESS

and we believe that hacker habits are essential skills. Contrary to what you may have learned hacking means, we mean learning by doing, seeing the web as a lego, taking things apart, pulling them together and being entrepreneurs and innovators.

JESS

..and we are working on 3 ways to support the acquisition of these skills. By developing free web based tools and curriculum, holding hack jams for youth, and through our online community- a safe space to bust a hack.

ATUL

The X-ray Goggles tool makes it easy for youth to casually interact with any website and see the individual parts that make it up, without being overwhelmed.

This is the gateway into understanding the web as a place that is made, and as a potential platform for creativity.

Mess around with code.

See how changes in code change web pages. Understand how computers interpret the words you input.

Like magnetic poetry. Swap tags and objects on web pages.

ATUL

Important because there's no single developer web or company web, but a world wide web. (talk about the importance of community)

JESS

For kids to help design & test the tools and curriculum. A hackable "un-curriculum" development.

After kids have explored their favorite sites with the goggles, they can start to deep-dive into individual parts of pages, and even mess around with the code that makes them up.

Fast feedback loops are important here.

JESS

We are developing complimentary curriculum and resources for the grown ups in the room. Because theres no single developer web, or company web, but a world wide web- a community helping each other to learn.

JESS

we are developing events for kids to help design and test tools and curriculum. We are modeling the jams through the learning networks in nyc and chic and are looking for collaborators (hint hint) to branch out.

JESS

Our jams have proven that teens are learning real technical skills- html, css, dom, wireframing, prototyping and iterative design.

JESS

but they are also learning to be flexible enough to design for the future in an environment that they value. So no matter what computer language or platform is being used 10-20 years from now- they can easily adapt to new environments as a hacker.

Jess keeps talking here.

Right now we have been partnering with organizations to help develop the project and test it out with youth, or to just get work out to their constituencies.

JESS

Now, it is your turn, we want you to join the hackasaurus team- and help youth hack.
