Which is more important in baseball? Pitching or hitting?
Hypothesis
I believe that Runs allowed will have more of an affect on your winning percentage.
2014 Statistics For American League
2014 statistics for National league
2015 statistics for american league
2015 statistics for National league
All my data was found from http://espn.go.com/mlb/standings/_/group/overall
Facts I’ve found
-From my data i put together no team with a negative run differential has made the playoffs. Even though one might be more important than the other, both are very important to be successful and have a winning team.
-One interesting thing i found was that the team with the best record of 2015 was 24th/30th in terms of runs scored. That team is the St. Louis Cardinals.
-The Top 6 teams that let up the fewest runs in 2015 all made the playoffs
Graphs
From first glance it’s hard to determine which has more of an affect on your winning percentage, but based on the graph from 2015 it shows the runs allowed stat is a lot more linear showing more growth over time.
These Graphs also include what R equals
Equations
Runs scored equation- y=87.53x+644.46 R=.168
Runs allowed equation- y=-1095.62x+1236.1 R=.531
Conclusion
In conclusion i found that both aren't that greatly correlated, but pitching seemed to be more important and correlated in terms of win percentage.
