Choosing Your Option Subjects

Careers – Post-16 requirements

For some careers or post sixteen qualifications you will need to have studied them at GCSE level and achieved a certain grade

University Expectations

Equally, you may find that some Universities need to consider your GCSE courses when faced with high demand for their popular degree courses

Balance of Subject Types

Make sure you have a range of subjects when making your option choices (we will consider this further in the next slide)

Interest and Enjoyment

People tend to do better at subjects they enjoy and are interested in

Ability

Equally, if you are good at something you tend to enjoy it (that why people have certain hobbies)

GCSE Options and Future 6th Form Courses

Many BTEC, A-Level and IB subjects do not require you to study the subject at GCSE first

In fact many of the 6th Form courses you won’t have been able to study here at GCSE level

Many Post Sixteen Courses Do Not

There are BTEC, A-Level and IB subjects that do require a GCSE Qualification before starting.mainly they are the GCSE Core subjects which are studied by all students

Post Sixteen Courses that Do

Check with the teachers of your interest subjects if you have any doubts,.your careers teacher / Sixth form Centre / College of FE about any future courses.

Best to Check Beforehand

Demand and Supply

Last year the number of places available and students interested in studying a Vocational Course out of school were:

  • 50 places available overall – this works out at about 8 places per course
  • 68% students wanted a vocational course - if that were the same for your year that would mean 86 students wanted to study a College course

Important that your preference 5 & 6 are also subjects you would like to do
