THE DEWEY DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

How the Library Organized

2 of 43

Melvil Dewey 1851-1931

  • In 1876, Melvil Dewey devised a system of organizing books which is used in many libraries – The Dewey Decimal Classification System. He divided books into subject categories instead of arranging it alphabetically. That way all the books on a topic would be together on the shelf.

  • Each main class is further divided into 10 more specific subjects & these are called the Hundred Divisions
  • The third digit of each number is assigned with the Thousand Sections

HOW CALL NUMBERS WORK

13 of 43

  • All print or paper copies of books in the library have assigned call number, usually found on the book spine.
  • The call number represents what the book is about and acts like the book’s address on the library’s shelves.
  • It is made up of location code, numbers, author’s name/cutter line and copyright year.
