CONCORD (SUBJECT –VERB AGREEMENT).

  • The agreement between subject and verb is called ‘concord’.

  • A verb must agree with its subject in number and person.

  • E.g., The quality of the mangoes was good.

  • A subject is the noun that does the work of a doer.

  • Singular subjects (1) take singular form of the verb.
  • Mirzan sings beautifully.
  • Plural subjects (more than 1) take plural form of the verb.

AGREEMENT WITH RESPECT TO PERSONS.

  • I, We– first person
  • You – Second person
  • He, She, It, They – Third person.
  • Plural verb is used for first person and second person (I read newspaper, We read newspaper, You read newspaper).
  • Singular verbs are used with third person singular words.
  • (He reads newspaper, She sings songs, It works well)
  • This difference exists in present tense only.

  • The secretary and the treasurer are absent.

  • (Since there are other words before the nouns, then we realize that they are two persons. Therefore, we need to add plural verb).

Adjectives എന്നു പറയുന്നത്.

  •  “And’ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്ത രണ്ട് subjects ഒരേ ആശയത്തെയാണ് പ്രതി ഫലിപ്പിക്കുന്നതെങ്കിൽ verb singular ആയിരിക്കണം.

  • Suppose we use them in the sense of two, plural verb comes.
  • The bread and butter I bought from that shop are in a good.
  • “And’ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് കൂട്ടിച്ചേർക്കുന്ന nouns ന് മുമ്പിൽ “each’, “every “no’ എന്നിവയിലേതെങ്കിലും വരുകയാണെങ്കിൽ verb singular ആയരിക്കണം.

  • Eg: Each boy and girl has submitted the assignment

  • Either, neither, each, everyone, everyday, everybody, somebody, some one, anybody, anyone, nobody, no one, none എന്നിവയുടെ കൂടെ singular verb ഉപയോഗിക്കണം.

  • Eg: Either of them is invited to the show.

  • Everybody has come to the class.

  • Distance, time, amount of money, quantity or measurement, period of time എന്നിവയുടെ കൂടെ singular verb ഉപയോഗിക്കണം,

  • Eg: Five kilometers is not a long distance.
  • Fifty rupees is enough for a lunch. Ten kilos of rice is not heavy to be lifted.
  • Two years is necessary to prepare for civil service exam

  • When Gerund becomes the subject, then verb must be singular.

  • Gerund: a noun formed from a verb.

  •  Eg: Playing with mad dogs is very dangerous.

  • As well as, with, along with, together with, in addition to, in the company of, accompanied by, rather than, unlike, as much as besides തുടങ്ങിയവയിലേതെങ്കിലും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് രണ്ട് subject നെബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ ആദ്യത്തെ subject ന് അനുസരിച്ചായിരിക്കണം verb ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടത്.. ആദ്യത്തെ subject singular ആണെങ്കിൽ verb ഉം singular ആയിരിക്കണം. ആദ്യത്തെ subject plural ആണെങ്കിൽ verb ഉം plural ആയിരിക്കണം.

  • Eg: The chief minister as well as two other ministers is visiting

  • Or, either …. Or, neither. … nor, not only …. But also എന്നിവയിലേതെങ്കിലും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് രണ്ട് subject നെ ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ രണ്ടാമത്തെ subject ന് അനുസരിച്ചായിരിക്കണം verb ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടത്.
  • രണ്ടാമത്തെ subject singular ആണെങ്കിൽ verb ഉം singular ആയിരിക്കും
  • രണ്ടാമത്തെ subject plural ആണെങ്കിൽ verb ഉം plural ആയിരിക്കും.
  • Eg: Neither the chairman nor the members have come
  • Not only the members but also the chairman has come.

  • Cattle, cavalry, clergy, gentry, people, police എന്നിവ ഒറ്റനോട്ടത്തിൽ singular എന്ന് തോന്നാമെങ്കിലും ഇവയെ plural ആയി പരിഗണിക്കുന്നു. അതിനാൽ ഇവയുടെ കൂടെ plural verb ഉപയോഗിക്കണം.

  • The cattle are grazing in the field.
  • The police have arrested him.
  • The word ‘public’ is used both as singular and as plural.

  • News, summons, cross roads, wages, politics, physics, mathematics, economics, diseases like measles, mumps, rickets തുടങ്ങിയ subjects plural ആയി തോന്നാമെങ്കിലും ഇവയെ singular ആയി പരിഗണിക്കുന്നു. അതിനാൽ ഇവയുടെ കൂടെ singular verb ഉപയോഗിക്കണം.

  • Eg: The wages of sin is death.
  • Bad news travels fast. ( Like: Arun reads a novel).

  • Scissors, tongs, spectacles, pliers, trousers, pants, jeans, pyjamas, shoes, socks, glouse, binoculars തുടങ്ങിയവയെ plural ആയി പരിഗണിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ഇവയുടെ കൂടെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന verb ഉം plural ആയിരിക്കണം.
  • Eg: Those spectacles are of no use to me.
  • Black pants are very good for white shirt. NB:
  • എന്നാൽ ഇവയുടെ മുമ്പിൽ “A pair of ‘ എന്ന് ചേർക്കുകയാണെങ്കിൽ Verb singular ആയിരിക്കും.
  • Eg: A pair of shoes has been bought for my son.

  • Collective nouns + of+ noun ന് ശേഷം സാധാരണയായി singular verb ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

  • Eg: A group of politicians has come.

  • A gang of thieves has entered the bank.

  • Committee, organisation, team, jury, family തുടങ്ങിയ collective nouns ന് മുമ്പിൽ ചില അവസരങ്ങളിൽ singular verb ഉം ചില അവ സരങ്ങളിൽ plural verb go ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
  • ഒരു team നെ മൊത്തത്തിൽ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാനാണെങ്കിൽ verb singular ആയി രിക്കും
  • എന്നാൽ team ലെ അംഗങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് പറയുന്നതെങ്കിൽ verb plural ആയിരിക്കും.

  • Eg: The committee has taken a decision unanimously.
  • ഇവിടെ കമ്മിറ്റിയെ മൊത്തമായി സൂചിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. അതിനാൽ singular verb ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
  • The committee are divided on different opinions.
  • ഇവിടെ committee യിലെ അംഗങ്ങളെയാണ് സൂചിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് അതിനാൽ plural verb ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

  • Most of, lot of, half of, plenty of, a great deal of തുടങ്ങിയവയ്ക്കു ശേഷം countable noun ആണെങ്കിൽ plural verb ഉം uncountable noun ആണ് വരുന്നതെങ്കിൽ singular verb ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കണം.

  • Eg: A lot of vacancies are reported.

  • Plenty of sugar is lost.

  • Eg: A lot of vacancies are reported.
