August 15th

In Italy it is called ''Ferragosto'' and it celebrates the assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. It was already celebrated in Roman times, probably for a battle victory.

The day of ferragosto is traditionally dedicated to out-of-town trips to the seaside, rivers or lakes. People spend the day in search of refreshment because it is usually very hot.

  • The feast of the Assumption is honoured with a National Public Holiday and has a prominent place in the history of Malta.
  • Beside celebrating the feast of the Assumption we also celebrate the remembrance of the arrival of the Convoy of Santa Maria.
  • In 1942, the biggest battle took place at sea during the Second World War when Malta was short on food.
  • 14 supply ships sent by the British to Malta were continuously attacked by enemy planes controlled by the Germans, Italians and Vichy France.
  • Finally, the 5 remaining ships known as the convoy of Santa Maria, entered Malta on 13, 14 and 15 August 1942, virtually on the feast of the Assumption to supply the island with the much needed food and provisions.
