Patch Burn Grazing for Birds and Beef

Enhancing grassland bird habitat and improving beef performance

Katy Hoskins, Wildlife Habitat Federation

2 of 7

Students will learn about the grassland

bird decline in North America, why it

is concerning, and ways that habitat

management can slow this process

while at the same time benefiting

beef production efficiency and land health.

By removing fire from the landscape, we

have encouraged habitat degradation

through brush encroachment.

Beef cattle, and all grazing animals, benefit from

burned rangeland. Grasslands evolved under grazing

and fire. Restoring appropriate fire regimes benefits grazing

animals by increasing forage production, quality and palatability.
