The USA Hockey confirmation email will include your new USA hockey number and your USA hockey coaching portal username

Some may have to do the whole training and others will only have to do the refresher. It all depends on whether this is your first time going through or not.

Sometimes it may take a day or weeks for the Safesport to update

Courses range from 30-90 minutes

Please complete the age specific module for the age group you intend to coach (Note that this format has changed from past years)

You will need to take the Foundations of Player Development course before you can complete any additional age modules

Review your completed courses

Once you have completed the FPD course, select the course that applies to the level you intend to coach

Click on the “coaches” tab at the top of the USA Hockey website home page

Click on the “screening renewal” link. This will take you to the USA Hockey page about background screening. Please read all information carefully.

Click on the red coaches login tab

Then click on the link to begin your background screening. This will take you off the USA Hockey website and to a third party screening service

Login to the new USA Hockey Learning Center

Fill out all background screening information

Click on the coaches tab

It may take 24 hrs to two weeks for your background check to clear

Review your current background status. Pay attention to the expiration date

All rostered coaches must have a valid CEP # to be on the bench for games

Most clinics are virtual and are 8 hours long. Some states offer in person clinics

Certification levels are 1-5

Please be mindful of time zones should you choose a clinic from another state

Coaches must start at level 1 and work through at least level 4

You can find clinic dates and times on the USA hockey website by hovering over the “coaches” tab, followed by clicking on the “coaching clinic” tab

6U-8U coaches can stop at level 1 while remaining at the 6U and 8U levels, but must take level 2 before moving onto 10U

This will take you to the coaching certification level information

You may only complete 1 level per year

Please scan the QR code on your information sheet and fill out the application prior to the start of evaluations

Evaluations are September 20th, 2026

JYH will no longer reimburse for coaching certification fees

Reimbursement will come in the form of volunteer hour credit on the season

All coaches eligible to be rostered will have all volunteer hours credited

All on ice helpers (not eligible to be rostered) will receive half of their volunteer hours credited. (team limits apply)

All 10U-14U head coaches will receive a free skater for the season

All non-parent coaches are eligible for up to $2500, plus hotel and travel expenses, as determined by the HCC

All players suspected of a concussion must be removed from the ice immediately

If a parent has their player treated for a concussion, the player is not allowed to return to the ice until cleared by a medical professional

The WAHA Concussion Reporting form can be found on the WAHA website or on your coaching information sheet.

The JYH Safety Officer, Justin Wiskie, must be made aware of all concussions

If a parent or guardian does not have their player medically treated after a suspected concussion, the coach may step in and not allow that player to continue to playing if symptoms persist.

Deadlines for the previously mentioned coaching certifications:

CEP Level: Completed by December 31st, 2026

USA Hockey Number: ASAP and you will not be allowed on the ice without it

You are not allowed on the bench for games without a valid CEP Level

SafeSport: ASAP and you will not be allowed on the ice without it

If you successfully completed a CEP level last season, you are eligible to be on the bench until December 31st, 2026. In order to be on the final roster for the remainder of the year, you will have needed to complete your next level prior to December 31st, 2026 (level 4 is different)

Background Check: ASAP and you will not be allowed on the ice without it

It is very important to get you get your coaching requirements done ASAP to avoid any deadline issues.

A practice schedule will be worked out with Jets staff and HDC to coordinate Jets players for 6U and 8U practices

Communicate with the coaches as to what you want them to do while on the ice

Jets players can demonstrate or run drills

Encourage the players to interact with the kids and set aside some time at the beginning or end of practice for the kids to engage with Jets players

Jets coaches will help out from time to time in a skills capacity

Please remember to pick up all practice props, bumper pads, intermediate net pegs, pucks, shooter tutors, etc and put back to where you found them.

JYH will be working SFC to coordinate storage for all JYH equipment at the WSCC

SFC has purchased pucks that will be used for all practices. One bucket per rink. JYH will use logo pucks for all games.

SFC has also purchased some practice props.

Complete all coaching requirements within the allotted time.

One coach per team (head, assistant, on ice helper) is expected to attend JYH goalie clinics on Wednesday nights.

Be familiar with the JYH Standing Rules.

Participate in Monday Night Skills practices. One coach from each team should attend JYH Goalie practices.

Understand and follow the JYH PDM.

Communicate and maintain a good relationship with their team’s team manager.

Know and understand the JYH Coaches Code of Conduct.

Hold a team meeting at the beginning of the season. It is encouraged to hold additional team meetings as the season progresses, but no mandatory.

Enforce the Players Code of Conduct for all players.

Complete the End of the Year Survey.

Come to practices and games prepared. All practice plans and game plans should be shared with all coaches and on ice helpers prior to the start of practices or games.
