What is a Student Board Member?

  • Students elected/appointed to serve on Board of Education
  • Represent all students in the district on the board
  • Actively participates in board meetings
  • Casts a symbolic vote on matters brought up during the meeting
  • Often work with district admin and staff

What do Student Board Members Do?

  • Opening up Student Emails
  • Opening a commission to discuss police reform
  • Commissioning a Study into how a school district is segregated
  • Adding a student onto local advisory commissions
  • Reforming school dress code
  • Reforming closed campus regulations

Rights of a Student Board Member

  • Be able to motion and second at board meetings
  • Cast a vote after almost all items. The vote is recorded in the minutes but does not affect the outcome of the vote.
  • Meet with the Superintendent and staff the same frequency as other Board of Education members
