By the end of this activity, I want you to be able to know what hair type you have and the names of different styles.

The history behind cornrows

  • Braiding and cornrows date back thousands of years. They were earliest seen in ancient stone paintings in north Africa.
  • Braids represented things such as marital status, clan and age but were also fashionable.
  • Styles of braids and cornrows where taught and passed down through generations.
  • Braids also played a bigger impact in saving the lives of many enslaved people. For example, things such as maps to escape slavery.
  • Also, grains of rice were implemented into braids, which could have determined whether a person would have lived or died.

A style that tucks the ends of the hair away from being exposed to damaging agents such as sun, heat and constant manipulation.
