British writer and game designer Dr. Richard Bartle, author of Designing Virtual Worlds, wrote that once “virtual worlds have begun to reach their full potential [...] they truly can be - awesome, glorious, wonderful places where people can be and become themselves: freedom incarnate!”

As you begin your journey, it’s important to know what sort of player you will be. To add the secret identity to your inventory, scan the QR code or visit the weblink to take the Bartle Test. Record your scores on your character sheet (the test is out of 200%).

Booby Trap

As we’re studying physical science, a major goal for the year is to cultivate a growth mindset by learning how to recognize both our strengths and our weaknesses. This will help you learn from your mistakes and identify areas in which you wish to improve before stepping into a booby trap!

Fill out the spider web chart on your character sheet to add the booby trap to your item inventory, ranking your abilities on a scale of 1-6 (with 6 being strongest). But there’s a catch: you can only use each number once. Choose wisely!

A grappling hook is one of the most powerful items to carry with you as we scale the towering walls of Science City. Whether you’re stalking evil supervillains, rescuing innocent victims, or trying to beat rush-hour traffic, you will absolutely want a grappling hook on hand. This item is a lifeline!

In our classroom, your lifeline comes in the form of Google Classroom. By registering for the next unit, you’ll receive regular class announcements and assignment updates. Plus you’ll be able to easily communicate with the game designer any time of day or night.

A well-sharpened mind is a superhero’s best friend. The ability to think outside of the box and apply knowledge to worldly dilemmas will keep you one step ahead of your adversaries. In a crisis, vigilantes can put their heads together to come up with even better solutions!

To add intuition to your item inventory, scan the QR code to visit Padlet.com. There, you’ll predict what you think we will learn about next. Write 2-3 sentences telling what you think you know about work, energy and power. The password is _________.

Every superhero needs a sidekick who has their back, and social media will provide much of the support for our class together this year. That means using Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and a bunch of tools available through the Google Suite.

For now, though, you’ll want to head to the app store, download an app called Flipgrid, and create a user account. When you’ve installed the app, work with your team of heroes to submit your two minute introduction video and describe your special ability to the other superheroes in Science City. Make sure everyone in your group speaks on camera!

Fancy Rides are shiny, fast, and typically jam-packed with all sorts of electronics. To add the vehicle to your inventory, you’ll need to huddle together with a cluster of classmates and the Commissioner to get a similarly styled conversation on a roll.

Here’s how it works: there are four seats available in the heromobile. When you’re ready to play, rally your comrades and find an empty seat inside, and take part in a short conversation about what makes a vehicle’s engine run.

Spend five minutes in group conversation.

Comic books come in different sizes, but they are always held together by a spine. Sketchnotes, like comics, can be drawn any way you’d like -- and you will be scored on details that you include, NOT on your artistic ability.Sketchnote your answer to this question: What does your superhero look like? Draw it in any way you’d like, but include at least 10 details and make sure to label each of these items on the sketchnote. When you’re done, show your sketchnote to the commissioner to collect the comic book.

Use the reverse side of your character sheet to create your sketchnote.
