Revision Guide: link

  • Recommended study / revision hours per day - Students in Grade 10 at this stage of their MYP 5 programme will typically be studying for 4-5 hours per day through the break.

  • Study / revision methods - Our children will have individual preferences in how best they study. However, it is widely recommended that revision should take place in short bursts, with no distractions, with regular short breaks. The little and often approach. Active revision (use of mind-maps, flash cards, Q&A, past exam papers) as opposed to simply reading over their notes is more impactful.

  • Revision timetable - Students are encouraged and supported in developing their revision timetables. Realistic daily study goals should be set, building in time for exercise /wellbeing.

  • Booster Sessions - Attendance at these sessions will support progress further and provide additional opportunities to speak directly with teachers. It is important that your child attends these sessions. Booster sessions will continue throughout the academic year.

  • Study routines and study areas at home - Students need to be disciplined and develop a routine with their study. External distractions such as mobile phones and TV should be switched off and students are encouraged to study in a quiet area in the home.

Study Tips: ACTIVE versus PASSIVE revision

11 of 13

WHEN? Spaced Practice - ‘little and often’

  • Pomodoro timers
  • Procrastination - the 10 minute strategy

HOW? Retrieval Practice

  • Flashcards - e.g. Anki Digital App
  • Blurting
  • Self quizzing or explaining to
  • someone
  • Making notes & mindmaps
  • Write your own recall questions
  • Google Spreadsheet Revision

Passive revision like reading notes, highlighting or watching videos feels productive but does not stick in long-term memory.

What can I do as a parent ?

  1. Normalise anxiety - small amounts are normal, talking helps
  2. Create a study routine - quiet space, daily plan, short sessions
  3. Encourage healthy habits - sleep, water, movement, screen breaks
  4. Reduce overwhelm - break tasks into small steps
  5. Check in, do not pressure - ask what help they need
  6. Keep attendance high - lessons and booster sessions matter.

1 day missed = 1 week missed in Grade 10.

  • Stay positive - effort matters more than perfection

  • Be positive! Reassure them that you are and will be proud of them, no matter what! There is life after exams.
