Ontario Secondary School Diploma

1) 30 Required Courses.

*18 Compulsory and 12 Elective Credits.

2) 40 Hours of Community Service.

3) Successful completion of the OSSLT.

OSSLT (Literacy Test)

The successful completion of the OSSLT is mandatory for graduation from an Ontario Secondary School.

The test is traditionally completed in 2nd semester Grade 10.

Students in Grade 10 will receive in-class prep for the test.

Ottawa Carleton Virtual School (OCVSS)

​

• Students interested in attending OCVSS virtual school next year must complete the google form located at the link below by February 22nd, 2022

Note: All Grade 11 courses have a “3” in the course code.

Importance of Grade 11 Courses!

​

The elective courses you choose in Grade 11 can/will determine which courses you can take in Grade 12.

For example, you must take SPH3U in order to take SPH4U.

Your Grade 12 courses determine eligibility for post-secondary programs (see links on next slide)

All prerequisites are indicated in Xello.

French Immersion Program

*French Immersion Certificate: Completion of 10 credits in French Immersion

*Extended French Certificate: Complete 7 credits in French Immersion

*You must complete the FIF1D, 2D, 3U and 4U classes for either certificate.

Co-op

• An opportunity to explore a career of interest in a workplace setting while earning credits.
• Combination of classroom learning and on-the-job experience.
• Co-op teachers will seek suitable placements.
• Supplementary application to be emailed later in the spring to students who select Co-op.

Concert Band and Jazz Band

• You will not be able to select Concert Band or Jazz Band in Xello. �
• You must have signed up for either Instrumental Music, Guitar, or Vocals to sign up for Band.�
• To select Concert or Jazz Band please fill out the Google Form at this link by Friday, March 4th.

Peer Teaching (GPP3O)

A leadership opportunity at John McCrae as a grade 11 or 12 student.

Working with a teacher at JMSS within a classroom for a Grade 9 or 10 course.

Please contact your guidance counsellor for more information.

Link Crew

In Grade 11:� - This is extra-curricular opportunity - not a course! � - You do not earn a credit in Grade 11.

If interested, please complete this Google Form by Friday, March 4th.

Application required - more information to follow after March 4th.

Alternate Course Selection

You must select an Alternate Course. It will be used to replace an elective course option which:

1. Is cancelled due to low enrollment
2. Is conflicting with another selected course scheduled at the same time
3. You are waitlisted for*

*You will remain on the waitlist for your original �course selection.

Resource Period (Learning Strategies)

• You must have an IEP to take a Resource period.

• A Resource Period can be selected as an elective on Xello. The course code is GLE3O.�
• Please contact your guidance counsellor if you have any questions.

HPA Students

• Select your HPA courses on Xello.
• All HPA Courses are listed with “HPA” after the course code.
• Can also search “High Performance Athletes” in the search bar to see all options.
• If you have questions, please contact Mr. Toms.

Summer School July 2022

Summer School information will be available in April/May.

Please select your courses assuming you are NOT going to Summer School for a Reach Ahead course.

Course changes will be made later during Summer School registration, if needed.

eLearning Courses (not OCV)

• Selecting eLearning courses on Xello will not register you in an eLearning course. You will have the opportunity to register for eLearning classes in the spring.
• Please choose 8 JMSS in-school courses, even if you are interested in taking eLearning.
• eLearning courses are completely asynchronous.

All parents / guardians of 2022-2023 Grade 10 - 12 students are welcome to attend our Virtual Question and Answer evening regarding course selection for Grades 10, 11 and 12
