Ontario Secondary School Diploma

1) 30 Required Courses.

OSSLT (Literacy Test)

The successful completion of the OSSLT is mandatory for graduation from an Ontario Secondary School.

The test is traditionally completed in 2nd semester Grade 10.

Students in Grade 10 will receive in-class prep for the test.

Importance of Grade 11 Courses!

The elective courses you choose in Grade 11 can/will determine which courses you can take in Grade 12.

For example, you must take SPH3U in order to take SPH4U.

Your Grade 12 courses determine eligibility for post-secondary programs (see links on next slide)

  • You will not be able to select Concert Band or Jazz Band in Xello. �
  • You must have signed up for either Instrumental Music, Guitar, or Vocals to sign up for Band.�

A leadership opportunity at John McCrae as a grade 11 or 12 student.

Working with a teacher at JMSS within a classroom for a Grade 9 or 10 course.

Alternate Course Selection

You must select an Alternate Course. It will be used to replace an elective course option which:

  1. Is cancelled due to low enrollment
  2. Is conflicting with another selected course scheduled at the same time
  3. You are waitlisted for*

*You will remain on the waitlist for your original �course selection.

Resource Period (Learning Strategies)

  • You must have an IEP to take a Resource period.

  • A Resource Period can be selected as an elective on Xello. The course code is GLE3O.�
  • Please contact your guidance counsellor if you have any questions.

  • All HPA Courses are listed with “HPA” after the course code.
  • Can also search “High Performance Athletes” in the search bar to see all options.

Summer School information will be available in April/May.

Please select your courses assuming you are NOT going to Summer School for a Reach Ahead course.

Course changes will be made later during Summer School registration, if needed.

eLearning Courses (not OCV)

  • Selecting eLearning courses on Xello will not register you in an eLearning course. You will have the opportunity to register for eLearning classes in the spring.
  • Please choose 8 JMSS in-school courses, even if you are interested in taking eLearning.
  • eLearning courses are completely asynchronous.
