About
AbbVie is a pharmaceutical research and development company that currently has a drug program for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).
Problem Space
While this drug is effective for patients with CLL in a clinical trial setting, there are difficulties for patients who need to take this medication in the real-world because of the lack of constant physician monitoring.
Patients are at high risk of developing Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS), which is when cancer cells break down too rapidly in their body for the waste to be excreted.

Beyond the Workshop - Takeaways
Our objective is to enable patients and providers with a digital solution that can address the gaps in current CLL management, with focus on reducing and/or mitigating the risk of TLS.
Design Goals
Accurate Physician Diagnosis
How do we prevent TLS?
We developed an algorithm based on the tumour burden of the patient into three outputs, low, medium or high risk for developing TLS.
Based on the diagnosis, the physician will be able to prescribe different prophylaxis amounts and level of blood chemistry monitoring needed.
Design Goals
Seamless Patient-Provider Communication
To track it all, we designed a remote patient monitoring system that will allow healthcare providers and nurses to check on the patient’s progress.
The healthcare providers are able to send notifications to the patient when they notice that their biomarker levels are out of range, and the patients are able to let the healthcare providers know how they are progressing.
Design Goals
Physical and Digital Consistency - Mental Model
AbbVie’s physical medication package.
Drug name redacted for NDA.
Digital Companion uses the same colours, with considerations of WCAG compliant colour contrasts.
Design Goals
Simplifying an Elderly Patient’s Routine
How do we simplify the patient’s therapy? By creating a routine.
Each day, there are 3 tasks the patient has to complete. Taking medication, drinking water, and keeping biomarker levels in range.
Weekly dashboards with the same routine still follows the colour consistency.
Design Goals
Emotional Support - leveraging AI
Design Goals
Providing Education to Empower Patients
Patient and Healthcare Provider Testing
In addition to designing the prototype and user testing protocol, we wanted to facilitate user testing sessions to test our concepts with our users.
We weren’t able to talk to real patients because of FDA regulations, so we recruited providers by proxy who interacted with patients firsthand through another agency.
Testing Goals
Validate our assumptions about how a patient wants support during their therapy journey
Evaluate the usability of help and support features - were they able to find help when needed?
Discover areas of improvement and additional information HCPs or patients want to know

“What if we could make the bot more like a psychological assistant?”
“Support 24/7 is amazing.”
“When an alert is urgent, it should be unique and the most important thing to take action.”
“It would be nice to track additional patient behaviors that could affect the therapy.”
