Your IEP team at the early childhood learning center, or ECLC, will support your child's transition to pre-k or kindergarten by implementing transition practices throughout the year. These practices help support the path from preschool to PK or kindergarten, creating a smooth transition for our families, children, and educators. A successful transition is built on sharing information, building relationships, and program alignment. The ECLC team will share information about the transition by preparing children for what to expect, communicate and share data with families, and the receiving elementary school site.

If your child’s IEP reflects only speech and language service or primarily receiving services within the General education setting at ECLC within the Learning Center Model (LCM), they will receive services at their assigned neighborhood school.

If your child requires specialized programming and services, you will be notified by the end of May to inform you of your child School of Attendance for next year. The ECLC team will work closely with you regarding information and what to expect about Elementary Programming to prepare you and your child for the transition to school. It is the District's intention for your child to attend an elementary school closest to your assigned neighborhood school.

Please contact your child's case manager if any specific questions regarding your child's IEP and transitions come up.

The only eligibility requirement to enroll in school is a student's age and DOB. This is mandated by the state of California and the only legal requirement of children entering school.

Students who turn 4 years old on or before September 1st are eligible to enroll in Pre-K. Students who turn 5 years old on or before September 1st are eligible for Kindergarten, and students who turn 6 years old on or before September 1st are eligible for 1st grade.

In alignment with California Education Code, IUSD enrolls students based on their age eligibility.To verify the grade level your child will be enrolled in, identify where their date of birth falls on the graphic. In accordance with California Education Code, IUSD enrolls students where they are age eligible.

On occasion, parents have an interest in an alternate grade level placement to moving from kindergarten into the PK program or to move out of PK and into Kindergarten. As a district, we are firm on our enrollment procedures, and place students in the grade level in which they are age eligible.

Students must begin at their age appropriate grade level - if there is a need to shift or you feel there is a need to shift, you would work directly with the school sites to determine if this is possible.

We are obligated to adhere to CA Education Code and enroll students in the grade level in which they are age eligible based on their date of birth.

Most of our students are more than ready to start school!

It’s very common that our parents are a bit more nervous or anxious then our students!

School anxieties are contagious!

As nervous as you may be - Try to stay calm and show your excitement because children will pick up on those emotions! .

A few ways to help prepare you and your child for the first day -

Introduce your them to their new school
On the weekends - Play on the playground
Peek in the classrooms –
Visit your school’s website or social media accounts
If your school hosts an Orientation or Meet and Greet we encourage you to attend as this is a chance for your child to meet some teachers & staff

Read Books! There are a lot of books that talk about this important time and transition such as, The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn - which is a wonderful story a lot of our teacher will read on the first day!
