Sci Tech Lab & Garden

Connecting City Heights to the wetlands through restoration.

Review restoration from field trip & interactions between plants and different spheres

Introduce planting process, procedure and supplies

1) Pick a pot with soil (geosphere)

2) Add a few seeds on top and lightly pack into soil

3) Spray with water (hydrosphere) 10 times

4) Place in blue bucket w/ rock.

Assign seeds & take class to garden for planting

  • Once everyone has planted their seeds, explain next step.
  • Science is fun and we can use it in many ways! Instead of walking these plants down to the nursery, what else can we do? Ask students if they see anything that can be used.
  • Introduce zip line & split class in half, one sending plants and one receiving,
  • Students practice communication: Name > Zipping? > Zip On!
  • Upstairs (Senders): Line up and take turns gently pushing plants down zipline.
  • Downstairs (Receivers): Take turns catching plants and bringing to nursery.

IS PROGRAMS: BELIEVE SURVEYS

Believe Surveys

Our mission is to provide hands-on science education in ways where students can recognize and do science.

Believe Surveys help Ocean Discovery capture the success of our programs and our students’ perception of engaging in science post program participation.

There are no right or wrong answers, and everything is based on how the individual feels on a scale between strongly agree to strongly disagree.

Facilitation

Believe surveys are administered together as a class, where the instructor will read each question and allowing time for students to respond. In this way, we can further explain what the question is asking and what the scale means.

Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year!Teacher Feedback highlights from 2022-23…

The instructors were so patient with the students. The instructors were so knowledgeable and inspired the students that being a scientist is fun and easy. Being a rainy day, everything was well organized.

I just want to thank you for the all the effort and patience throughout the day. My class was really excited about both field trips. Thank you!

All of the teachers were encouraging and supportive. Their use of teacher moves and management strategies were excellent and made the day engaging and successful for all.

Thank you for your awesome program and always having so much staff who loves the kids and science

The program and educators were organized and engaging. It was lots of fun and informative for them. Thanks!

We love this program! I felt like all the instructors who worked with my students were knowledgeable, thoughtful, and did a great job with classroom management! Thank you!

I really appreciate the passion and support your staff has for this program and the kids in this community

Thank you for years of positive, engaging experiences for our kids.

CLIPBOARD ORGANIZATION

Clipboards are a great resource to use during instruction.

Share some examples of how you use yours!

Personalize it!

  • Name
  • Stickers can be used to express personal interests (school/work appropriate).
  • They also make great conversation starters & community builders w/ students
  • Ocean Discovery Sticker for uniformity & so it can be easily identified if left behind

Keep it simple

  • Cover Page = Curriculum “cheat sheet”
  • Program Timing Schedule
  • Blank paper for notes
  • Clean out after every grade level

INSTRUCTOR CORE KICK-OFF

Mission: To inspire the next generation of science leaders, Ocean Discovery Institute creates learning experiences for young people traditionally excluded from science due to race, income status, and educational opportunity. Our students will join high-paying fields, break generational poverty, and change the future of science.

Individually, we are one drop of water, but together, we are an ocean. Every single drop counts, and it take just one drop to make a ripple.

In 1-2 sentences, write down why you chose to be in this role. Re-write this in your water drop and tape on to your clipboard.
