What is a Multistep Equation?

A multistep equation is an equation that contains more than one operation.

To solve a multistep equation, follow these two rules

RULE 1: Do addition or subtraction first

    • If a number is added to the variable, subtract that number from both sides.
    • If a number is subtracted from the variable, add that number to both sides.

RULE 2: Do multiplication or division last

    • If the variable is multiplied by a number, divide by that number on both sides.
    • If the variable is divided by a number, multiply by that number on both sides.
