What is a Response Paper

A response paper should start with a an unbiased summary of the article, essay or item being discussed. After the summary an analysis of the item is next. In the analysis you can and should give you opinion of the piece.

Summary

In a summary you are retelling the main points in the piece. Summaries are in chronological order. In a summary you do not add an opinion and there is no background information needed. You are just stating the main points. A summary can be an essay or a paragraph. It depends on how long the piece is.

Outline

Intro

  • Short history about the piece, title and author

Beginning

  • What was important in the beginning

Middle

  • What was important in the middle

End

  • What was important in the end

Analysis

In an analysis you are detailing what makes a piece unique. You pick points about the piece that stand out.

Analysis do not really include opinions. Analysis should not be in chronological order.

Response

In a response you will mostly focus on your opinion. Your opinion will need to be based on evidence from the piece you are critiquing. It is not a summary nor an analysis. It is really a combination of both. A response will have a short summary and then your response. A good response is persuasive.

Summary

  • Short summary. Should be only one paragraph.

Epilogue

There is a definite difference between a summary, an analysis and a response. A summary is just that. An analysis looks at what makes a piece unique. A response is a blend of summary and analysis with your opinion.
