Notes for Teachers

  • Context: This lesson is intended to be a

6- Day lesson .

  • Day 1-3: Students will learn the importance of using reliable tools when gathering data in an experiment. After learning about the discovery of the acidic components of Jupiter Moon’s Oceans vs the discoveries of Earth’s neutral Moon Ice, students will be given common acidic and basic substances. The students will then begin to understand how to make a hypothesis and experiment with the pH testing methods.

  • Day 4 - 5: Students will examine and investigate trends of pH Meters to determine how existing meters compare to pH Meters from the past. Thereafter, student groups will be asked to creatively communicate a persuasive presentation of their choice that will convince the school principal to buy one of the six best, most accurate, digital pH Meters on the market today.

  • Day 6: Student groups will present their persuasive presentation to the class before sending them to the principal who will then share with science groups their final digital choice and decision process.

List of Materials:

Day #1- 3 Materials:

  1. Document Camera
  2. Visual modeling/video

*Earth's Moon Ice

*Jupiter moon's ocean may be too acidic

to support life

Science Standards:

MS-PS1-2: Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances.

Ms-PS1.A: Determine how substances react chemically in characteristic ways.

Crosscutting Concept Exploration:

• ask questions and define problems ● develop and use models ● plan and carry out investigations ● analyze and interpret data ● use mathematics and computational thinking ● construct explanations and design solutions ● engage in argument from evidence ● obtain, evaluate, and communicate information

6.RI.7 Integrate information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue.

6.SL.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.

CCSS. ElA-Literacy. RST. 6-8.3:

Follow precisely a multi-step procedure when carrying out experiments or performing technical tasks.

Objective(s):

In this lesson, students will first learn the importance of using reliable tools when gathering data in an experiment. When given common acidic and basic substances, students will then begin to understand how to make a hypothesis. Next, students will experiment with the pH testing methods. Thereafter, students will examine and investigate trends of pH Meters to determine how existing meters compare to pH Meters from the past. Finally, students will be asked to collaborate to create a persuasive presentation of their choice that will convince our school principal to buy one of the six best, most accurate, digital pH Meters on the market today.

Success Criteria: All students will know they are successful when they have:

  • Compared the discoveries on Jupiter’s moon to the discoveries on Earth’s moon.

  • Determine why humans cannot drink or use the water found on Jupiter’s moon in the same way we can use water found on Earth’s moon.

  • Utilized the pH Testing methods to determine the pH of given substances.

  • Describe the trends of current pH Meters and those of the past.

  • Worked in groups of 4 to creatively communicate in a persuasive presentation of their about a new digital pH Meter that can be purchased to use in the present and future.
