[Techno-Oceans 2016, Kobe, Japan.]

Solution

Fish-i is a semi-automated video camera-based fish census system that provides fish population density and distribution measurements for monitoring Marine Protected Areas and for quantifying environmental impact of projects on marine and inland water ecosystems.

Problem Statement

Underwater Fish Visual Census requires substantial time, training and specialization in fish identification, and suffer from observer bias due to fish behavioral avoidance in the presence of the diver conducting the survey. The limited number and availability of fish experts is a bottleneck that makes regular monitoring of Marine Protected Areas practically impossible.
