College & Career Counselor

College and career counselors serve as a liaisons between the college and high school, ensuring smooth communication and supporting students throughout their dual credit journey.

Review and process all required permission forms for dual credit enrollment
Help students resolve account holds to clear the way for registration
Assist students with degree planning and selecting the right courses
Clearly communicate all program requirements and important deadlines
Provide guidance for both academic planning and navigating college expectations
Connect students and families with college resources and support services

Benefits Of Being A Collin College Dual Credit Student

Convenience: Students can take college courses without leaving their high school campus (ISD dependent).
Cost-Effective: Dual credit programs can help students save money on college tuition.
Early Exposure to College-Level Work: Students can get a taste of college-level coursework and prepare for higher education.
Increased Academic Rigor: Dual credit courses can challenge students and help them develop important academic skills.

Note: Students considering dual credit courses should research not only their high school's and college's requirements, but also exploring course options, eligibility criteria, and credit transfer policies will help ensure their credits count toward their future degree.

Cougar Book Bundle

Textbook fees will be included in the tuition for dual credit courses as an additional fee.

Instead of purchasing items separately, students will pay a flat fee of $23 per credit hour.
Physical books will be packaged through the bookstore, and digital materials will be delivered directly via Canvas.
Students will have an opportunity to opt-out through the B&N portal included in their email.

Student code of conduct

Review the student code of conduct for both the high school and college; dual credit students are expected to follow college standards for behavior, academic integrity, and professionalism

Drop/Withdraw Deadlines

Pay attention to college drop and withdrawal deadlines; missing these dates could impact grades and future eligibility for dual credit or college courses

The importance of attendance

Understand that good attendance is crucial for college success; missing class can impact grades and may violate attendance policies.

Get to know your course syllabus

Get to know each course syllabus thoroughly, including all expectations, grading policies, and assignments; the syllabus also lists exam dates and project deadlines

Maturity for subject matter

A dual credit student must be prepared for advanced coursework, mature subject matter, and a more independent college classroom environment.

The importance of time management

Develop strong time management skills to balance high school, college coursework, and other responsibilities; dual credit courses often have more rigorous deadlines and less frequent reminders from teachers.

-Students are required to abide by the Code of Conduct for both the HS & Collin.

-The syllabus is the student’s guide on how to be successful in the course. All important information will be in it and we encourage students to put due dates in their phone calendar or planners at the beginning of the semester.

-Attendance is crucial to student success in DC. It may be part of their grade in some classes.

-Students must have strong time mgmt. skills and be able to balance extracurricular activities and their DC classes.

-Professors in DC courses more voice in what subject matter/books/materials they can include in their courses. Students may encounter more mature content in DC classes.

-The drop deadline-students can drop before this date and it is if they never took the class. It will not be on their transcript. The Withdrawal date is the absolute last day they can get out of the class. A “w” will appear on their transcript showing they started the class but did not complete it.

High School vs. College

HIGH SCHOOL	COLLEGE
High school is mandatory and usually free.	College is voluntary and expensive.
Students can count on parents and teachers to remind them of assignments, priorities and deadlines.	Students must balance their responsibilities, set priorities, and manage their time. They are expected to take responsibility for what is completed/not completed.
Testing is frequent and covers material as you go along.	Testing is generally less frequent but covers broader material, and professors set firm due dates in advance.
Teachers frequently conduct review sessions and point out important concepts.	Students are expected to prepare themselves for tests and assignments and ask questions for clarification.
Teachers may frequently rearrange test dates to avoid conflict with school events.	Professors set exam dates and due dates at the beginning of the semester and include them on the course syllabus. These dates do not usually change.
Students work with their high school counselor for high school graduation requirements.	Graduation requirements are complex and differ for each college. Students should consult with their advisor to ensure requirements are met.
Parents can talk to teachers without the permission of students.	Only the student can speak with their professor about their class, unless a FERPA waiver has been authorized.

FERPA applies to all college students regardless of their age.

Students can give Collin staff/faculty permission to speak with a parent/guardian, and they can decide what information is shared.

Students can also change what access they grant at any time.

Student must:

Check their high school’s policies about dual credit, and make sure to meet all posted deadlines.
Receive approval from their high school counselor
Students must finish the full Collin College admissions process including the removal of admissions holds on a student’s account by the high school deadline.

3. Registration

All students will be registered by the P-12 Partnerships Office

High schools will provide P-12 Partnerships an approved list of students, courses, and class periods for registration.
P-12 Partnerships will register and notify students of registration and payment deadline.

4. Payment

Students are responsible for viewing their Collin College schedule and submitting payment by high school stated payment deadline.
Students may not be added back into dual credit courses if dropped for non-payment (based on ISD policy).
Tuition is paid each semester.
Students eligible for Free/Reduced Lunch will have their cost of tuition waived by Collin College
Dual credit students are eligible to apply for Fall Collin College scholarships
