How Many Students at FSC Report Having A Disability?

Our Mission:

The Disability Services Center (DSC) is dedicated to the principle that equal opportunity be afforded each student to realize his/her fullest potential. The goal is to assist students with disabilities to function as independently as possible, and to ensure a comprehensively accessible college experience where individuals with disabilities have the same access to programs, opportunities and activities as all other students at the college.

    • Students provide documentation about their disability to our office via email.

Common Accommodations & What They Mean

  • Extended Time: Extra time or double time on tests and quizzes.

  • Reduced Distraction: A separate, quieter location for testing.

  • Recording: Students may record lectures to aid in their learning. (Note: NYS is a one-party consent state.)

  • Classroom Materials: Students may request a copy of PowerPoints or take pictures of the board.

  • In-Class Support: Accessible desks or an aide in the classroom.

  • Important: All accommodations are official and provided in a letter from the DSC. Please avoid "backdoor accommodations" to ensure equity and proper support for all students.

Flexible Attendance

  • Emails gets sent out to each professor for each student. (41 students currently- 142 emails sent out)
  • This accommodation means that an absence from class due to a student’s disability is considered an “excused” absence, and will not be subject to sanctions that the class instructor would ordinarily enforce.
  • The student understands that approval of this accommodation does not mean that they are exempt from completing graded assignments given/due on the day they are absent. The student also knows that they must reach an agreement with their instructor about the manner in which they will complete all work missed during their absence.
  • This accommodation requires communication between the professor, student, and the DSC. The student should email the instructor and DSC on days they need to use this accommodation.
  • Again, flexible attendance is a continuing discussion between all parties to ensure the needs of the class are met, and that reasonable flexibility around the attendance policy is given to support the student due to their disability.
  • Please complete the listed questions below and email them back to all parties to ensure that the student and office understand the expectations and requirements of your course.
    • 1. Does the fundamental nature of the course rely on student participation and interaction as an essential method for learning? If yes, explain how?
    • 2. What is the agreed upon number of absences a student can miss that would fundamentally alter this course?
    • 3. Within what time frame can a student make up any in-class assignments or exams (Ex. 24 hours)?
