Rationale

By traveling abroad, students will

learn how to navigate different cultures, communicate in their target language of study (German) and gain a global perspective through contextual learning. All of the cities and historical sights on the itinerary reflect places of study in the curriculum of German I - AP.

This will be my fifth trip as a chaperone for study/travel abroad at Pennsbury. I have also acted as GAPP (German-American Partnership Program) Co-Coordinator for many years. Hosting and traveling abroad changed everything for me as a Pennsbury student during my sophomore (‘89) and junior year (‘90). Spending the summer in Germany and attending our sister-school in Oldenburg expanded my worldview, improved my communication/language skills, helped me foster friendships and inspired me to study abroad later in college which paved the way for my teaching career at Pennsbury! Even though our exchange program is currently on hold, I am excited to coordinate and chaperone this travel tour of “Germany-in-Depth” and look forward to watching our German scholars grow through contextualized learning!

How do I enroll?

Fill out the Pennsbury Student Application. Students must be in good academic standing, have good attendance and no suspensions. Submit this ASAP to adifazio@pennsburysd.org.
Review and sign the Pennsbury Release Form and Conduct Code. Submit this ASAP.
Enroll on the ACIS registration page (next slide) and secure a spot with the $200 enrollment fee. Please note that if you waive the premium travel insurance, you need to state this on the student application.

My daughter, Ainsley, had a life-changing experience while in Germany with Mrs. DiFazio on the PHS school trip last spring. She loved her experience so much that she decided to major in international business with a minor in German while in college.

The entire trip was extremely well-planned and very educational, while also allowing the students to immerse themselves in the German culture and get a real feel for the country and its people. As a parent, I’d highly recommended the trip for any high school student. It’s an education you cannot get inside a classroom.

I had loved taking German and learning about the culture through the German Program at Pennsbury, but going to Germany changed my life. I have now shifted my entire future around being able to live there and experience the culture more fully. I plan to study International Business to be able to share German accomplishments with other countries and help them understand that other’s success are to be celebrated and not seen as a threat to your own superiority. Some of my favorite memories ever is from that trip and it was incredible being able to create such unique memories with my best friend at 17.

Student Reviews

The things I enjoyed about last year's trip to Germany included eating German food, learning about their culture and traditions, and seeing all the beautiful nature and architecture. One of my favorite meals was Spätzle, and my favorite snack was from Rothenburg ob der Tauber it's called a Schneeball or snowball it's a deep-fried pastry that's very delicious. In Dresden, we visited a museum and learned all about the culture of Dresden as well as some of the city's history and learned about the famous diamond that is there. My favorite architecture would have to be the Bavarian architecture. Also, all the snow-capped mountains were beautiful and I loved being enveloped by the sprawling mountains.

Last year’s trip to Germany was amazing! Going to Germany has definitely opened my eyes and experienced how the people in Germany lived. I have seen scenes that I would have never seen before and was definitely an once in a lifetime opportunity that you should experience. The hotels we lived in were very nice, the people were very welcoming, the food was amazing, and you could make many new friends like I did. Overall, the experience there was very unique and I for sure encourage anyone who can go on the trip to go.

The Germany trip was amazing! It felt great to speak German in the country itself, try authentic meals and learn about the history of German towns that we studied in school. I made so many new friends on this trip and we became a family. Being shy, this trip helped me break out of my shell. Now I am a college freshman and look forward to studying abroad at the college level. If I didn’t travel abroad in high school, I wouldn’t have the desire or confidence to go.
