Project Introduction

Ergonomic Game Controller

  • Create a game controller that is accessible for individuals with health conditions that limit the range of motion and dexterity of their hands or fingers.

Project Goals

  • Ease of use
  • Accessible to all
  • Generalized design
  • Adaptability to user

Main Issues of Sustainability

Materials Used in Design

  • Cost and availability of sustainable materials
  • Questioning the sustainability of soldiering and electrical components

Addressing People’s Needs

  • Ensuring a cheap non intrusive design
  • Compatibility with different people
  • Keeping in mind that we are dealing with a personal issue

Renewable Energy or Resources

  1. Polylactic Acid (PLA)

  • High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

  • Controller’s Ergonomic Covering

  • Foot Pedals connection

Used and Wasted of Materials Issues

3D Printing:

  • Plastic printing resources of polylactic acid (PLA) are getting cut off by the limits of print size due to disadvantaged support from 3D printers.
  • Dimensional incompatibilities and missing printed parts result in reprints or result in the final product using other resources.

Components:

  • The optional functionality of the foot pedals requires the removal of specific electronics in order to work.

Pollution Issues

  • Welding fume is produced by the soldering process, in which the soldering iron melts the metal alloy, creating serious heavy metal gases that flow into the air.
  • Heat shrink tubing for wires can produce corrosive and toxic gases when overheated by a heat gun.

Safety and Health Issues

  • The welding process requires specific base plates and clamps for welding, and protective glasses and face shields are required due to the release of toxic gases. Clean all affected parts after each welding.
  • Most types of wires and cables require insulating sheaths at connection points, and corrosive gases and lead-based poisons can spread through the air into the human lungs.

Environmental Issues

  • Most materials are set as the recycled category if they are not reusable, which is recommended to transfer to renewable energy.
  • Most electrical components must take energy conservation into consideration, such as LEDs and Arduino boards used in the project. Global warming is one of the catastrophic examples of cumulative causes.

Social Issues and Constituents

  • Our target audience are individuals with physical or neurological disabilities that affect their hand dexterity, and present a way for them to be able to compete or play videogames with other people.

  • The gaming community is open for everyone but prejudice to certain individuals may still be present.

Economical Issues

  • Though our current project uses cheaper materials to make the final product as cheap as possible for the consumer, future shortages and limitations may cause prices to fluctuate meaning this statement could be inconsistent

  • Materials used may need to change over time as new materials are introduced and to find better balance between price and environmental impact

People, Planet, Profit Relationship

  • We are taking into account feedback from video game players with disabilities to create the most comfortable

product for their specific needs and to make the controller as easily adaptable as possible while maintaining a reasonable price

  • Environmental issues should be taken

into account with the same concern as

cost

Project Footprint

  • Our project will provide a cheaper alternative for accessible video game controllers and make it easier for people with physical disabilities to play any game they want the same as anyone else

  • The increase in people with

disabilities playing video games

should help destigmatize them

within gaming communities

and create more accessible

products in the future

Conclusions

For the next development, the evolution of ergonomic game controllers represents a commitment to disabilities user well-being, it will be embracing eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient technologies, and modular designs that facilitate easier repairs and upgrades. The word ergonomic will be a dividing force in the game industry.
