WHAT IS CO-TEACHING?

  • Two certified teachers are present in the classroom and work together through the teaching process: planning, teaching, and assessing progress.

  • Students frequently have different learning styles and preferences, and co-teaching allows those different needs to be more easily met.

Chromebooks

  • Students in grade 6 will have the opportunity to bring their school-issued Chromebook home.

  • Students are expected to complete their work on the Chromebook while logged into their Chesterfield account.

  • Students are expected to charge their Chromebooks every night.

  • Students are expected to treat their Chromebooks with care, as per the “6th Grade Chromebook Expectations” sheet.

English Language Arts (ELA)

  • We will be using the online platform, Amplify ELA, for instruction.

  • A more integrated approach to reading and writing

  • Varied reading and writing opportunities within the literacy block and throughout the day

  • Units will utilize a shared read of complex grade level text to teach vocabulary and build background knowledge for all students.

  • Independent reading time will focus on student interest and appropriate book choice rather than on independent reading levels.

Status of the Class

  • Students are expected to write the name of the book that they reading and the page numbers on a Reading Log so that their reading is more organized.

  • Students are expected to read for at least 15 minutes every night including Saturday and Sunday.

  • Students are questioned randomly about their book with concepts reflecting theme, point of view, summarizing, predictions, inferencing, etc.

  • Students are also expected to create a timeline goal of when they think they would be finished with their books. This helps students assess their individual fluency levels.

  • Teacher acts as a guide, highlighting strategies for solving problems and helping students understand the reasoning behind the math.

  • Students frequently discuss math with each other, listen to others ideas, justify their thinking and critique the reasoning of others.

    • Aligns with the Amplify program. It provides onscreen models and examples as well as manipulatives. It is an immersive digital platform that will serve as supplemental, reinforcement, and enrichment for our students.

    • A website that differentiates instruction and closes learning gaps as well as allowing opportunities for advanced math students to practice skills above grade level

Social Studies

The committee is working on a tiered system that outlines ways to use positive restoration to help improve student behavior.

  • TIER 1 - Classroom Interventions
  • TIER 2 - Classroom interventions plus support of admin and counselors, as well as partnering with home
  • TIER 3 - Admin team will come to the classroom to provide support

  • Foster the health, safety and social and emotional well-being of students.

Grading

  • ELA- Standards-based grading- assessments and performance tasks may be graded using a rubric. Feedback will be provided in student notebooks, on Google Classroom, and/or the online Amplify platform.

  • Math- Standards-based grading- performance on assessments will be provided on rubrics. In addition, students will receive frequent feedback on exit tickets and/or problem sets.

  • Science & Social Studies- Traditional grading will remain for these subject areas. Feedback for Social Studies will be found on teachtci.com. Science feedback will be provided in notebooks, labs, and/or Amplify online platform.

Homework

  • Students are responsible for copying assignments into their Assignment Book
  • Assignment books are filled out together
  • Next day and long term assignments
  • Homework is due next day unless otherwise directed
  • Please write a note if there is trouble with homework at home.
  • There should be no more than 55 minutes of homework a night.

Goal: to promote self-confidence, independence, teamwork, and foster a bond between CES students before heading off to middle school

Camp Mason April 22-24, 2026:

  • Outdoor Education overnight trip
  • Activities: Team building, hiking, mid-range ropes course, pond ecology, eco art, geocaching
  • Information regarding a parent night will be coming

Liberty Lake June 11, 2026:

  • 6th grade picnic
  • Swimming, paddle boats, sports, mini-golf, laser tag, etc.
