Slide 1: Peritext Definition
The definition of peritext is in short just something on the book that says something but isn’t in any way related to the text. It could be a sticker, an award or something like that.
An example would be this:
It’s an example because although
it’s on the book, it has absolutely no
relation to the text inside of the book.
Slide 2: Sophisticated Picture Book Definition
A sophisticated picture book is basically an advanced comic book, it’s similar to a comic book because they both use pictures but it’s different because sophisticated picture books use different colours, fonts, tone and texture.
An example of it is the picture to the below seeing as it uses all kinds of colours and textures.
Slide 3: Memorial Definition
A memorial is usually a stone monument to mourn, honour or remember a person or people that either lost their lives or did something during their life.
Slide 4: The Unknown Soldier
The Unknown Soldier was a term for soldiers who died in the war but had no identification on them so their identities were never found, that means that they had no dog tags, letters, papers or anything else that could be used to recognise them. They also tended to be in pieces because of explosions.

Quote
‘The story ended up being not about war, memorials, or rememberance as “grand” subjects but about the small quiet memories that make up ordinary day to day lives.’ -Shaun Tan
Explanation: Shaun Tan means that the story didn’t end up being about war and other things, but about how the small and important memories that we carry and remember almost every day affect our day to day lives.
Example from the book:
The Great Grandfather told the narrator of the story that although the people are gone, their memories can forever live on in the minds of others.
