Stage 2

Theme:

Connecting Local Issues with Global Knowledge

Goal:To link local observations with international examples of environmental protection.

3 of 15

Step 1.

Preparation and Introduction to International Practices

Global Examples of Sustainable Agriculture

Practice

What the World Does

Short Explanation

Composting organic waste

Many countries, such as Japan and Germany, turn food waste and leaves into compost.

Composting reduces waste and creates natural fertilizer for plants.

Crop rotation and multi-cropping

In India and the USA, farmers rotate crops like wheat, corn, and beans.

Changing crops helps keep the soil healthy and prevents pests.

Using organic fertilizers and reducing chemicals

In Denmark, organic farms avoid synthetic pesticides and use natural compost and manure.

This keeps the soil fertile and protects water and wildlife.

Reducing plastic use

In France and Canada, farmers use reusable containers and biodegradable packaging.

It helps cut pollution and keeps farms cleaner and greener.

Using renewable energy and saving water

In the Netherlands and Australia, farms use solar panels and collect rainwater.

Renewable energy reduces emissions, and water-saving systems protect natural resources.

Local Practice

Global Example

Similarities

Differences

Composting in the school garden

Schools in Germany and Japan compost food waste to make natural fertilizer

Both reduce waste and improve soil quality

Local composting is small-scale; global examples use more advanced systems

People still use plastic bags in local shops

In France, plastic bags are banned and replaced with paper or reusable ones

Both used for carrying goods

Local shops still use plastic; France promotes eco alternatives

School sorts paper and plastic waste

In Sweden, schools sort and recycle different materials

Both help reduce pollution

Sweden has special bins and recycling centers; local sorting is basic

Students plant trees near the school once a year

In Kenya, the “Green Belt Movement” plants millions of trees to restore forests

Both focus on planting trees for the environment

Local action is occasional; Kenya’s project is continuous and large-scale

Students turn off lights when leaving classrooms

In Sweden and Germany, schools use solar panels and automatic energy-saving systems

Both aim to save energy

Local action is manual; global examples use smart technologies

Local farmers use natural fertilizers like manure or ashes

In Denmark, organic farms use compost and natural fertilizers instead of chemicals

Both protect the soil and crops

Local practice is traditional; Denmark applies modern organic standards

Step 3.

Choosing the Best Ideas for Local Application

Task:The team discusses 5–6 ideas that can be realistically implemented in the local community. Each idea includes a short explanation: why it is important and how it can help the local area.

Idea

Why It Is Important

How It Can Affect the Local Community

1. Replace plastic bags with cloth ones

Reduces plastic waste and pollution

Keeps streets cleaner and encourages eco habits

2. Plant trees and flowers around the college

Improves air quality and supports biodiversity

Makes the area greener and more pleasant

3. Collect rainwater for watering plants

Saves water resources

Reduces water bills and teaches sustainable use of water

4. Organize “No Plastic Day” at the college.

Raises environmental awareness

Involves students and teachers in eco-friendly actions

5. Create posters about saving energy

Promotes responsible energy use

Encourages everyone to turn off lights and devices

Step 5.

Presentation and Discussion

Sustainable development starts with us.

  1. What surprised you?
  2. What can we do first?
  3. Why does sustainable development start with us?

Diana Sokyrko

  1. I was surprised that some countries completely banned plastic bags.

2. We can start by bringing cloth bags instead of plastic ones.

3. Because small actions together make a big difference.

Victoriia Hybalo

Ivan Hladyshenko

  1. I didn’t know schools in other countries collect rainwater for toilets.
  2. We can make posters reminding everyone to save water and energy.
  3. Because our habits influence our friends and families
  1. I didn’t realize how similar our local actions are to global ones.

  • We can separate paper and plastic waste properly.

  • Because change always starts with people who care.

Vladyslava Terlyha

Olexandr Korol

  1. I didn’t expect students in Japan to grow vegetables at school.

  • We can plant more trees this spring.

  • Because the Earth is our shared home.
  1. I was surprised that saving even small amounts of energy really matters.
  2. We can organize a “No Plastic Day” at the college.

  • Because if we don’t act, no one will do it for us.
