Gethsemane
Acts 4 : 31 - 37
2
Mat 26:36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
3
Mat 26:39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
4
Mat 26:42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
5
Mat 26:45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

What happened in Gethsemane ?
7
Mat 26:36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
Jesus came to Gethsemane to pray
And asked His disciples to pray
with Jesus
8
Mat 26:39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Jesus depended on the Father’s heart
9
Mat 26:39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter.
Because Jesus depended on
the Father’s heart,
Jesus could stay awake and pray
His disciples fell to sleep
10
Mat 26:41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Only by depending on the Father’s heart,
can a person avoid falling into temptation
11
Mat 26:42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
Because Jesus depended on
the Father’s heart,
Jesus could do the Father’s will
His disciples failed to do so
12
Luke 22:42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
Because Jesus depended on
the Father’s heart and will ,
the Father’s power came down
from heaven to Jesus
13
Mat 26:45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
After Jesus depended on
the Father’s heart, will and power
Jesus awakened His disciples

15
Jesus in Gethsemane
Jesus was in sorrow
Jesus prayed to the Father
Jesus depended on the Father’s heart
Jesus was able to do the Father’s will
The Father’s power came to Jesus
Jesus awakened His sleeping disciples
16
The disciples in Gethsemane
Jesus called them to watch and pray
They depended on own ability (flesh)
They fell to sleep
They could not do the will of Jesus
Jesus awakened His sleeping disciples
17
Look at the story prior to Gethsemane
in the book of Matthew
(whereby the foolish virgins failed to join the groom in the banquet)
18
Mat 25:1 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
The foolish virgins did not have oil
They did not depend on Father’s heart
The wise virgins had oil
They depended on Father’s heart
19
Mat 25:1 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
The 10 virgins fell to sleep
20
Mat 25:6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ 9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
The bridegroom came
21
Mat 25:10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
The wise virgins joined the wedding banquet because they have the oil
(the Father’s heart) with them
The foolish virgins went to buy oil
from merchants (other human being)
22
Mat 25:11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’
The foolish virgins called the bridegroom as LORD
23
Mat 25:12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
The groom did not let the foolish virgins to enter the banquet,
even as they called Him as LORD
The oil from the merchant was fake
The merchant was a false prophet
24
Who will fail keep watch and miss the coming of the kingdom of heaven on earth ?
25
Who will keep watch and enjoy the banquet at the kingdom of heaven on earth ?
26
Look at the story prior to Gethsemane
in Luke
27
Luke 22:24 And a dispute also developed among them as to which one of them was regarded as being the greatest.
Who is the greatest among men ?
28
Luke 22:25 And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles domineer over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26 But it is not this way for you; rather, the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.
The greatest among men is the one that is willing to be served by Jesus
Like a youngest child,
served by his eldest brother
29
Luke 22:27 For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
Jesus is willing to become a servant
so that His disciples become the greatest
30
Luke 22:28 “You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials; 29 and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you 30 that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
The greatest among men is
the one that sits at the table,
served by Jesus,
in the Father’s kingdom of heaven
Like the wise virgins
who depended on the Father’s heart
31
Who is the greatest among men ?
