Demand for Foreign Trade

      • 19th century westerners tried to convince Japan to open ports to trade.

      • Treaty of Kanagawa 1854 ~ Japan opened 2 ports where US ships could take on supplies.

      • By 1860 Japan granted Westerners access to trade

      • Reign of the Shogun ends.

Imperial Japan

    • 1890 ~ Japan was strongest military power in Asia.
    • sought to eliminate the extraterritorial rights of foreigners.
    • National pride played a large role in Japan’s imperial plans.
    • Determined to show the world they were a powerful nation.

Japan Attacks China

      • 1876 ~ forced Korea to open 3 ports to trade.

      • China and Japan then agreed they would not send armies into Korea.

      • China breaks agreement and Sino-Japanese war lasts for a few months.

      • Japan drove China out of Korea and destroyed Chinese navy.

Japan Occupies Korea

      • Japan attacked Korea in 1905 and made it a protectorate.

      • 1910 Japan imposed annexation on Korea ~ brought country under Japanese control.

      • Shut down Korean schools, and newspapers.

      • Replaced Korean language and history with Japanese subjects
