I want you to think about all of the roads you drive on daily, to and from work, the store, visiting family members, or taking that yearly road trip. Across the country there are many different types of roads, from dirt roads to busy 6 lane highways and everything in between. We have experience on a large variety of roads. If something happened to your car, have you ever considered where the safest location would be to pull off the road? Let's take a look at some of the factors to consider when trying to find a safe place to pull over in an emergency for a flat tire and how we pull off the roadway safely.

If you are experiencing any kind of car trouble, take your foot off the accelerator, do not slam on your brakes. You never know what other drivers are paying attention to so go slow.

Make sure to signal to other drivers what your intentions are. If you need to change lanes, use your blinker. You need to slow down and will be creating a hazard so be sure to turn on your hazard lights to signal to other drivers that you are experiencing trouble.

On a busy highway, if you must pull over, there is usually ample space to pull over on the right hand side of the road. Never pull over on the left hand side of a highway even if there is a median. The right lane is typically the slowest which also should mean it is the safest to be near compared to the left lane.

If you can make it to an exit and into a parking lot, that would be safer for you rather than the highway.

Make sure to pull off the road as far as you can. According to AAA, pedestrians on the highway account for 10% of all fatal pedestrian deaths in the United States.

As soon as you come to a stop, put the parking brake on. There are three different types of parking brakes so be sure you are familiar with the location and operation of the parking brake of the vehicle you are driving.

You may find a hand brake located in the center console, a foot brake to the left of the pedals, or an electronic parking brake as a button somewhere on the dash.

If you have parked on a hill, be sure to wedge a large rock or piece of wood on the downhill side of the tires. If you are parked next to a curb on the right hand side of the road, on a hill, turn your wheel all the way clockwise (facing downhill), or counter clockwise (facing uphill).

In cars and some SUVs, the spare tire is located in the trunk of the vehicle. It is stored in a recessed part of the trunk while not in use. You will have to lift up the bed of the trunk to access the tire. This tire is usually secured in the trunk with a bolt and a wing-nut fastener.

Pickup trucks and some large SUVs will carry their spare tire under the rear of the vehicle. You will need to lower the tire to the ground from under the truck in order to use the spare tire. In order to lower the tire, you will need to locate the tool pouch that comes with your vehicle.

Where are my tools?

If you haven’t located the tool pouch or tools that came with your vehicle, you will need to do that now. If the spare tire is located in the trunk of your car, generally the tools are in the recessed well with the spare tire. If your spare tire is on the tailgate or under the vehicle, there will usually be a compartment inside your vehicle where the tools or tool pouch is located. This could be under a seat, behind a seat, or in a compartment in the floor. Please consult your owners manual if you have trouble finding the tools.

Car jack – You will use the car jack to raise your vehicle off the ground.

Lug wrench – The lug wrench is used to loosen/tighten the lug nuts and raise/lower the car jack.

Spare tire – The spare tire can be a full size replacement or a donut. The full size tire is the same size and weight as the tires on your car whereas a donut is smaller and lighter than a regular tire and saves space.

Please note, you may also need a “key” to take off a locking lug nut. The “key” is usually located in the glovebox. If your car is equipped with locking lug nuts, there is usually one on each tire which you will need the “key” for. Place the key over the lug nut as an extension to the lug wrench.
