Our school is a welcoming and positive place for students to learn and grow. We have strong Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions in place. Students can earn individual SOAR tickets for following school expectations. These can be redeemed in the lunchroom each day. Hawk Bucks are class rewards that can be earned and saved for class activities. Each teacher gets to nominate a student each month who exemplifies our school values.

Our school also has a book vending machine. Students get to pick a book during their birthday month.

We offer Chinese Dual Immersion, Lion Dance Team, Wellness Center, Student Council for 4th & 5th graders, weekly PE & library, bi-monthly dance classes, monthly classes in STEM, technology, social skills, & music.

CALVIN SMITH GRADE LEVEL MASTERY SKILLS

2nd Grade

By the end of the year your Scholar should be able to:

  1. Count to 1,000.
  2. Ask & answer questions about key details in a text.
  3. Answer basic 2nd grade math facts fluently.

Kinder

By the end of the year your Scholar �should be able to:

  1. Recognize and name letters and their sounds and use these skills to build words.
  2. Recognize numbers 1-20 and count objects in groups up to 20.
  3. Count to 100 by 1’s.
  4. Read kindergarten sight words.

You can help at home by:

  • Using letter cards to practice letters & sounds and to build words.
  • Finding letters and numbers in real-life.
  • Counting & writing objects to 20 & counting to 100 w/ hundreds chart or while in the car, running errands, etc.
  • Using flashcards to practice sight words at home.

You can help at home by:

  • Count to 1,000 out loud and define each number’s place value.
  • Ask and answer questions about key �details in a text.
  • Add and subtract 3-digit numbers..

3rd Grade

You can help at home by:

  • Reading books on your child’s grade level.
  • Teaching your child how to respect others. �Help them to know how to keep their �bodies to themselves.
  • Limiting screen time for your child.

1st Grade

By the end of the year your Scholar should be able to:

  • Write a paragraph using an introduction, details, and conclusion. Remember capitals, spacing, best guess spelling, and punctuation.
  • Read a passage fluently (quickly with expression).
  • Know and understand numbers 1- 120.
  • Quickly and correctly add and subtract within 20.
  • Understand the place value of 2-digit numbers to the tens place.

By the end of the year your Scholar should be able to:

  1. Identify the main idea/theme & key details of an informational or fiction text.
  2. Be fluent in basic multiplication and division problems.

You can help at home by:

  • Reading daily with your child and asking questions about the text.
  • Practicing addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts using flash cards, �card games, and dice games.

4th-5th Grade

By the end of the year your Scholar should �be able to:

  1. Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details
  2. Be able to write a 3-5 paragraph essay.
  3. Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems.
  4. Learn about scientific phenomena for a better understanding of the world.

You can help at home by:

  • Ensuring your child has a book on their level to read 20 minutes a day, asking them to summarize the main idea and key details after reading. Ask “who, what, when, where, why” questions.
  • Practicing math facts 1-12 using flashcards or math games.
  • Practicing real-life skills such as counting money, measuring, asking the time on the clock, etc.
  • Asking your scholar to explain what they’ve learned in science and when they notice it in the world around them,
