The Talk

2 of 6

Before you say anything introduce yourself!

You may have said hello at the open house, but this is your chance to show them who you are and introduce the pack.

  • Welcome at the door
  • Flag Ceremony
  • Servers at Ice Cream Social
  • Full Uniform
  • Introduce Pack Leadership
  • Sing a song or a skit!

The Talk (with kiddos)

Time to pitch the kiddos! Mom and Dad make the final decision, but let’s pitch the kiddos first. What do the kids want to know about?

  • What is cub scouts? (Scout Oath and Law, Leadership, Uniforms, Citizenship)
  • How is this going to appeal to me? Explain the fun!
    • Run through an abbreviated event schedule
    • Talk about the cool adventure loops
    • Show off pictures of everyone having a blast- trifold board or powerpoint
    • Tell them we like to play games and have Den Leaders take them to play one during the grown up talk

THE TALK (kiddos are playing)

Don’t wait for questions,

you have the answers

Answer the frequently asked questions with your adult pitch:

  • Can I drop my kid off and pick up later?
  • When, where and what is a pack/den meeting?
  • Calendar: What is the time commitment?
  • Fundraising?
  • What does it cost? Breakdown: Uniform, registration, campouts, dues?
  • Where is the scout shop? What is Raingutter Regatta? Where is Camp Post?
  • How do you communicate with parents?
  • Parent expectations? Committee Meetings?
  • Opportunities- Open leadership positions
  • How do I register? Are you set up to do it right now!? What do you get for registering?!?!

*Don’t be afraid to be honest. It’s not as easy and dropping your kids off at practice and cheering from the sidelines. Learning to live by the scout oath and law is a gift each parent can give their child that will extend far beyond a single season. The program is designed for bonding and building character. That is something every parent should want to be hands on with.
