A New and Divided Nation :

  • When India became independent in august 1947 . It faced a series of very great challenges .

. The problems of refugees and of the princely states .

. divisions between high castes and low castes .

A constitution is written

  • on 9th December 1946 the constituent Assembly sat for the first time.
  • In the span of two years 11 months, it completed the Indian constitution.
  • on 26th November 1949 the constituent Assembly adopted the constitution of India which came into force on 26th January 1950.

Features of Indian Constitution

  • Universal Adult Franchise
  • Equality before the law to all citizens.
  • Special privileges for the poorest and most disadvantaged Indians.

  • In 1950, the Government set up a planning commission to help design and execute suitable policies for economic development

constituent assembly was a body or assembly of representatives composed for the purpose of drafting or adopting a constitution. The Constitution was framed by the Constituent Assembly established under the Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946.

Division of powers

  • The Constituent Assembly spent many days discussing the powers of the central government versus those of the state governments

A states organization

  • States Reorganization commission was set up which submitted its report in 1956, recommending the redrawing of district and provincial boundaries to form compact provinces of Assamese, Bengali, Oriya, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu speakers respectively.

  • Between high and low castes ( In rural areas they still face discrimination)
  • Some live Luxurious life and others are below poverty line.
