Multiplication Tables Check

What is the test and why do I need to know about it now?

• It is an on- screen check consisting of 25 times table questions.
• Children will have 3 practice questions before the actual check.
• Children have 6 seconds to answer each question.
• It takes no longer than 5 minutes to complete the test.
• It will take place throughout the month of June.
• Once the data is collated and returned to the school, class teachers will be able to share your child’s score. They are expected to get full marks yet there is no pass mark for the check.
• Children need to be confident and secure in their knowledge to pass and the practice starts now.

Why do they have to participate?

• The purpose of the test is to determine whether your child is fluent with their recall of times table facts up to 12 times 12.
• Multiplication recall is essential for future success in mathematics.

What will the school do to support my child?

• We are practicing times table facts in classes daily.
• We are reminding children of the importance of multiplication facts and making links where possible.
• We have bought into Times Tables Rockstars where children can practice their skills, compete against peers and try to earn status and rewards.
• Weekly times tables tests to check children’s progress.
• We will be using the STA’s ‘try it out’ area from April so children can become familiar with the format.

How can you support your children?

• Practice times tables with children at home.
• Games can be fun and effective e.g. times table ping pong, times table snap, times table pairs, flahscards.
• Encourage the regular use of Times Tables Rockstars.
• Even once your child has learnt their multiplication facts, they need to continually rehearse them otherwise they will be forgotten and speed will decrease.
• Practice division facts from related multiplication facts so children see the links.

Garage- These are the tables that are set by the class teacher related to their weekly tests.

Studio- This is where the children can practise their times tables up to 12 x 12 to gain a rock status.

Soundcheck- This area is similar to the format of the Multiplication Tables Check. 25 questions with 6 seconds per question.
