The New Online:
Facebook recently changed their name to Meta.
This new name shows that Facebook wants to be a leader in the Metaverse, but what does that mean?
The Metaverse is a new online universe (宇宙) which can be best experienced in virtual reality (VR)
Why the Metaverse?:
Online technology can give us music, shopping, and movies instantly, but doing these things online has a different feeling than doing it in real life.
The Metaverse brings a feeling of space and social closeness by not just bringing you an online movie, but by creating an online theater for you and your friends and family.
In VR you can see the movie in your private theater, all the while chatting with friends who feel like they are right next to you.
A Meta Meeting:
In a meta meeting, VR people can feel close to each other. This is a good way for people to share their ideas.
Also, meta-meetings will be very convenient for two reasons. First, people can be together even when they are far away around the world.
Second, in a meta-meeting, it’s easy to share files and information. We can take pictures or video.
Your Meta-Space:
What is an activity you think people will want to do in the metaverse?
Why will doing it in VR be more fun or more interesting than doing it ‘online?’
Are there any special things people can do in this Meta-place that they can’t do in real life?
A Meta-Problems:
First, many are concerned about the dangers of the metaverse. We already spend too much time looking at screens, and VR brings screens closer to our eyes.
Also, the danger of bumps and falls goes up when we can’t see our surroundings.
Finally, internet technology was created to allow people to communicate and share information quickly. It is not clear if the metaverse actually does that. Is it a new reality or just a worse, slower, and more dangerous one?

In the Metaverse, people will go to Meta-theaters.
From home, groups of friends will meet in one meta-theater to watch a movie. They can choose the best seats and best of all, they can control the movie. They can make the movie rewind if they want to hear or see a favorite part again. Also, they can talk as loudly as they want because there is no one else in the theater to bother!
