• Loud reading is also known as oral reading.
• Loud reading guides the learner to read with comprehension with increasing speed.
• Loud reading exercises should be given to individuals only.

Loud Reading

Objectives of Loud Reading

• To enable the students to read with correct pronunciation, articulation, intonation,stress, pitch,pause,pace and rhythm.
• To understand the meaning of spoken words , phrases and sentence.
• To develop in the student a desire for silent reading.

Advantages of Loud Reading

• The learner follows the model reading of the teacher.
• It develops the skill of speech and giving lectures.
• It trains the sensory organs---eyes,ears and mouth�It makes students learn by imitation.

Disadvantages of Loud Reading

• Loud reading does not give pleasure.
• Loud Reading may often cause loose attention on meaning.
• It will be a hindrance to others engaged in silent reading.

• Silent Reading is considered to be the best kind of reading as the mind is fully engaged in the act.
• It should therefore be encouraged as soon as children have acquired a certain amount of fluency in loud reading.
• Speech organs are at rest,the eye is the chief speech organ.

Objectives of Silent Reading�

• To enable learners to read without using the speech organs.
• To enable them to read with comprehension.
• To enable them to enrich their vocabulary.
• To enable them to get information and derive pleasure.

Advantages of Silent Reading�

• It saves time and energy
• It has immense value in future life,in public life as well as in self improvement programs.

Disadvantages of Silent Reading

• Silent reading is not worthwhile for beginners.
• Corrective procedures are not much effective.
• While silent reading teacher can’t make sure that the student is really reading or not.

• Intensive reading involves detailed study of linguistic and literary aspects.
• In Intensive reading the texts are read carefully and thoroughly again and again.
• The reader is intensely involved inside the text.

Intensive Reading

Objectives of Intensive Reading

• To enable students to extend their vocabulary and to enrich language.
• To enable students to understand,speak and write correctly.
• To enable students to think in English.
• To enable students to develop interest in English.

Advantages of Intensive Reading

• It enriches vocabulary, structure, pronunciation, grammar,etc.
• It provides a base for students to develop a greater control of language.
• It provides for a check on the degree of comprehension for individual students.

Disadvantage of Intensive Reading�

• Detailed analysis of the language features,will not be very interesting to all the learners.

Extensive Reading

• Extensive reading is carried out to achieve a general understanding of a text.
• Extensive reading is always done for the comprehension of main ideas.

Extensive Reading

Advantages of Extensive Reading

• It promotes literary reading.
• It increases vocabulary.
• Increase reading comprehension.
• Improve their attitude towards reading and became more motivated to read.

Disadvantages of Extensive Reading

• It does not give emphasis to analysis of linguistic features as it concentrates on subject matter.
• The learners get minimum attention or no attention at all from the teacher.
