How Can I Use this Resource?

We are excited for you to practice high frequency words in a fun way! You can use these activities in any order you choose. Some require a partner- find someone at home- and some are for you to do all by yourself. Game boards are linked in the slides. You can also just use paper at home to create your own game boards. Have fun!

All Mixed Up!

  1. Choose several words from each letter of the word list. Write these words on cards.
  2. Close your eyes and have someone change words from one pile to another.
  3. Quickly find the words that were mixed up and place them back under the correct letter.

Roll That Die!

  • Find a number cube with 1-6.
  • Roll the die and find a word with that many letters in it. For example, if you roll a 3- you could find the word “him” on your word list.
  • Write the word on your chart.

The Eraser Game

  1. Player 1 chooses 8 word wall words.
  2. Player 2 tries to guess the words they are writing before they complete the whole word.
  3. Once all 8 words are written on the board/paper, player 1 erases 1 of the words.
  4. Player 2 tries to determine which word was erased.

Word Wall Memory

  • Create a chart divided into the letters of the alphabet.
  • Study the word list for one minute.
  • Set the timer for 10 minutes. Write one word under each letter of the alphabet. Bonus points for more words!

Make My Word

  • Write letters of the alphabet on pieces of paper or post-it notes.
  • Player 1-Choose one word from the word list- and mix up the letters that are needed to make that word. (a-l-s-o)
  • Player 2- unscramble the letters in the word to determine the word list word.
  • Switch places, taking turns player 1 and player 2.

Crisscross Words

  • Choose 7-8 words from the word list.
  • Write the words across, and up and down so the words crisscross.
  • Use letter tiles or write the words on paper.

Letters in my First Name or Last Name

  • Write the letters of your first or last name vertically down the left side of your paper.
  • Next to each letter of your first or last name, find word list words that match that letter. Can’t find a letter to match? Write a word of your choice!
  • If your name is Rishi, yours might look like this:

How Much are Words Worth?

  • Use the letter bank to determine how much a word is worth.
  • Choose a word from the list and see how much that word is worth in points.
  • Write the letters and their value to add up to the total of each word.
  • Challenge!- Find a word worth 5 points, or 6 points, etc.

Get Moving!

  • Tall letters go from the top line to the bottom line on the paper.
  • Put your arms in the air when you see a tall letter.
  • Small letters go from the middle line to the bottom line or even below the line.
  • Squat down when you see a small letter.

The Missing Word

  1. Teacher or partner writes several words on the board or a whiteboard.

  • Teacher or partner erases one word.

  • Students write the word that is missing.

  • Teacher or partner confirms which word is

missing.

  • Student checks for accurate spelling.

Heart Word Lotto

  • Have students divide a piece of paper

into 16 squares.

  • Teacher displays 16 words for students to see.

  • Students write the 16 words in random order in each square of their board.

  • Teacher calls out one word at a time, students cover with some type of marker (chip, popcorn kernel, penny, etc.

  • Teacher continues calling words until one student gets 4 in a row.

Alphabetize Me

  1. Write heart words on notecards.

  • Mix the notecards in a baggie.

  • Choose 3-4-5-10 words from your baggie.

  • Put your heart words in ABC order.
