What is Elementary OS ?

Elementary OS is an Operating System similar to Ubuntu, which has the look and feel of a mac.��This Operating System is Open source and is improving its features based on feedback.

What Are the Benefits of Elementary OS.

  • You can use it as a plug and play device and not actually install the operating system.
  • It has custom made applications which can be accessed in the full version.
  • You can run commands in the linux terminal.
  • While running in Demo mode you can
    • Access Web
    • Code
    • Take Notes
    • Have a look and feel for the operating system.

How does it work ? will it wipe my existing windows/mac OS?

  • The demo mode does not affect your current operating system or its files in any ways.
  • The Elementary OS like any other Operating system when its installed onto a system the first time is done through a Flash Drive.
  • You require a Flash Drive which has storage more than 8 gigs.

What are the prerequisite for installing this operating system to a Flash Drive ?

Following are the Prerequisites for installing this Operating system onto a Flash Drive

  • As mentioned in the Previous Slide an 8GB Flash Drive or More.
  • Following Softwares :-
    • Yumi
    • Elementary OS iso

Steps to Install Elementary OS onto the Flash Drive

  • Launch YUMI:
    • Start the YUMI application.
  • Select USB Drive:
    • From the dropdown menu, choose the USB drive you want to use.
  • Choose Distribution:
    • From the list of Linux distributions, select "Elementary OS".
  • Browse for the ISO:
    • Navigate to the location of the Elementary OS ISO file on your computer and select it.
  • Install:
    • Click on the "Create" button. YUMI will then begin the process of setting up the multiboot USB with Elementary OS.
    • This may take some time depending on the speed of the USB drive.
  • Complete:
    • Once the process completes, you can safely eject the USB drive.

Steps to Boot the system from the Flash Drive

  • Since we are doing this in windows here are the instructions
    • Insert Flash Drive into the System.
      • Go to settings>Recovery>Advance Startup (if your current system is running).
        • Select UEFI Firmware and let the system restart.
        • This Option will take the system to BIOS (Basic input output system)
      • Navigate your way to Boot Options.
        • Select The Flash Drive and Drag to the top ( first priority booting option).
      • Save and Restart (F12).
    • If the Device is OFF then Follow These Steps
      • Insert Flash Drive
        • Enter the boot menu (typically by pressing F12, F2, DEL, or ESC depending on the computer brand), and select the USB drive.

Steps to Boot the system from the Flash Drive

  • You will see these options.
    • Select Elementary OS.
      • This Option will then load the operating system from the Flash Drive

Tasks For Elementary OS

System Update:

    • Open the AppCenter.
    • Check for updates and ensure your system is up to date.

Explore the Default Applications:

    • Launch and familiarize yourself with the "Music" app.
    • Write a short note using the "Code" text editor.
    • Browse your files using the "Files" app.
    • Explore the settings in the "System Settings" app.

Customize Desktop Appearance:

    • Change the desktop wallpaper.
    • Adjust the system's dark/light theme from "System Settings."

Multitasking View and Workspaces:

    • Open multiple applications and use the "Multitasking View" (typically activated with WIN + W or by swiping with three fingers on a touchpad) to see all open apps.
    • Create an additional workspace and move applications between workspaces

Tasks For Elementary OS

Setup Night Light:

    • Go to "System Settings" > "Displays" and set up the "Night Light" feature to reduce blue light during evening hours.

Test Notification System:

    • Send yourself an email (if you've set up an online account) or set a reminder to see how the notification system works.

Explore Keyboard Shortcuts:

    • Try out some of the Elementary OS-specific keyboard shortcuts like
      • WIN + T to open the terminal or WIN + Space for the applications menu.

Tasks For Elementary OS

Privacy Settings:

    • Go to "System Settings" > "Security & Privacy" and review the settings. Make adjustments as you see fit.

Check out the Picture-in-Picture mode:

    • Open a video (online or offline) and use the Picture-in-Picture mode to have the video overlay on other windows.

Customize Dock Behavior:

    • Right-click on the dock (the panel with app icons at the bottom) and customize its behavior, size, and position.
