The history of Athens

    • The history of Athens begins in the Neolithic era

and has been inhabited ever since.

    • It was built in a plain around four hills.
    • Of these, the most important is the Acropolis hill,

our first stop.

The hill of Acropolis

  • There it is located the Parthenon, the greatest and most famous monument of the ancient Greece, dedicated mainly in the protector and goddess of the city, Athena.
  • There you are able to see Caryatides, daughters of Greek mythology who are still support the Erechthium!

PLAKA

  • Exactly under the Acropolis stretches Plaka, one of the oldest and most scenic neighborhoods of Europe, with its taverns that provide delicious and traditional foods.
  • Walking down in Plaka, the visitor will get to know not only the ancient greek market but the ancient Roman market as well.

The museum of Acropolis

  • Few years ago was built a new, contemporary museum in order to host the whole history of ancient Greece and mainly Acropolis.
  • In this impressive building, someone can admire its original statues of the Parthenon.
  • Moreover, you are able to see historical objects that were used by the people who lived down of the holy rock of Acropolis.

A walk around Athens

  • Following the most beautiful street of our city, Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. After the completion of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a Roman building that housed musical events and still hosts great cultural events (theatrical performances, concerts, etc.).
  • We admire the impressive view of the Acropolis and we reach the historic districts of Thision, with the temple of Hephaestus dominating, and Monastiraki, with the famous market.

Museums…

  • At 2004, when Olympics took place in Greece, the subway was constructed. From then someone can easily visit some of the most important museums of the city that host the famous and very rich history of Greece.

1)The national archeological museum (the largest museum in the country) has different types of great exhibits from the prehistoric era until the Roman times.

2)The Byzantine and Christian museum is a gorgeous building with a fresh garden which hosts treasures of the period that starts after the destruction of the Roman Empire until its fall by the Ottomans.

Museums…

  • Next is the War museum and few steps away the National Art Gallery with the most famous paintings of the modern Greek painters. Moreover, the museum of Cycladic art, that is dedicated to the Cycladic culture.
  • The Athens not only has this type of museums but moderns ones as well. The most important of them is the Museum of Modern Art that keeps us in contact with the most recent trends of the artistic production. In the same time, another cultural sight can be the Benaki Museum, that host the most up to date exhibitions.

Cultural exhibits

  • The citizens of Athens do not miss to take a walk a walk in the National Garden , a park full of plants right next to the Parliament , the temple of the greek democracy and a building with huge historical material , in front of that spreads the Syntagma square , the heart of the city.
  • A bit further is located the Kallimarmaro , which is structured by pendelic marble . There were taking place the first Olympic Games of 1986.
  • To the south of the city it has been organised a strong cultural area , the Cultural Centre Stauros Niarchos , that someone is able to visit.

Theatres…

  • However, Athens does not only have museums and places of culture. It is a city alive, with a pulse, a city that offers spectacles, experiences, entertainment.
  • In its many theaters hundreds of theatrical productions are staged every year, its cinemas show films for every taste.
  • In the summer, the Athenians as well as the visitors of the city have the unique opportunity to watch all these spectacles in open spaces, in open theaters and outdoor cinemas.
  • One of the most important theaters of this kind is the Petras theater, in our city, Petroupoli!

Greek harbor

  • We have now reached the sea, where Piraeus is located, the ancient port of Athens, and one of the largest and most important cities of Greece, its largest port.
