The Shape That Can't Fall Over

In 2006, mathematicians proved a single-material shape exists that always rights itself — then noticed turtles had it first.

A shape with only one way to rest

Most objects have several stable positions to land in. The question: could a single, uniform solid exist with exactly one stable resting point — so it always rolls back upright, with no hidden weights inside?

THE DOUBT

For years, nobody knew if it could exist

The famous mathematician Vladimir Arnold conjectured in the 1990s that such a shape might be possible. But no one could find one or prove it existed. It sat as an open question — a shape that might live only in imagination.

THE BREAKTHROUGH

In 2006, they built it

Two Hungarian mathematicians, Gábor Domokos and Péter Várkonyi, finally proved it exists and constructed one. They named it the Gömböc. Set it down any way you like — it wiggles back to the same single resting spot.

THE TWIST

Turtles had it all along

After building the Gömböc, the researchers noticed its curves resembled the shells of certain tortoises — animals that can flip themselves back over when turned upside down. Evolution had found the trick first.
