National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)

  • The NCAA is a non-profit organization whose members include more than 1200 colleges and universities, conferences, and other organizations.
  • The schools under the NCAA are placed into one of three Divisions: D I, D II, or D III
  • One of the jobs of the NCAA is to enforce the rules which are made by its members.
  • Athletic Eligibility is one of the “rules” that the NCAA must oversee.

Initial Eligibility For NCAA DI and DII

  • Meet high school’s graduation requirements
  • Complete a-g requirements for admissions to college (UC/CSU)
  • Complete NCAA Core Course Requirement – 16 Core Courses
  • Earn required GPA for NCAA core courses

NCAA Eligibility Center

  • The NCAA Eligibility Center is responsible for determining the eligibility of every college-bound student-athlete in NCAA Divisions I and II.

  • The Eligibility Center must make:
    • Academic Certification
    • Amateurism Certification

Non-Qualifier

  • No scholarships
  • No practice
  • No competition the first year

Academic Redshirt

  • Scholarships
  • Practice only in first regular academic term

Full Qualifier

  • Competition

Student and Parent Responsibilities

  • Meet with your School Counselor to confirm your compliance with the NCAA.

  • Apply to the NCAA Eligibility Center.

  • Talk to your coach about your interest in college sports.

  • Take the ACT and/or SAT tests by the end of the junior year (if required).

  • Request initial transcript after you complete your junior year

  • Visit some of the schools you might want to attend

  • Review the NCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student Athletes posted on Eligibility Center website

  • Mail your college applications

School Responsibilities

  • Keep NCAA core course list current
  • Keep grade scales current (weighted and unweighted)
  • Help students track core courses
  • Send official transcript that confirms graduation from high school

Registration Process

  • Online registration is the only method to register
  • Go to www.eligibilitycenter.org
  • Click “Register”
  • Create a “Free Profile Page” D-III or Undecided
  • Create a your “Certification Account” D-I or D-II (during recruitment)
    • Pay the fee
  • Regularly update your planner
