WHAT IS FLUENCY?

Fluency is reading with:

  • accuracy
  • speed
  • expression
  • understanding

KEY ELEMENTS OF FLUENCY

  • Recognizing and pronouncing the words accurately
  • Reading at the right level of speed for the purpose and level of text
  • Using the voice to express meaning, including pausing and phrasing in line with the punctuation
  • This is especially difficult when learning a new language!!

PROBLEMS WITH FLUENCY

Readers might read:

  • slowly
  • in a monotone
  • ignoring punctuation
  • with a choppy "start and stop" rhythm
  • without monitoring understanding
  • without self-correcting

WHAT IS PHONICS?

  • Phonics is matching the sounds of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters. 
  • Phonics is made up of:
    • Decoding words and word sounds
    • Putting sounds together to make words
    • Spelling and word structures

PHONICS

  • If you see a large word that you don’t know, can you decode it?
  • For example, what is this word: idiosyncratic
    • Could you decode the word?
    • What strategies did you use?

SPELLING

  • When spelling, we apply the phonics rules that we know to help us spell words.
  • The hard part is—almost all words have exceptions!
  • Spelling involves some memorization!
