NBPSD Academic Intervention Program

Academic Intervention (A.I.) is supplemental instruction in either Language Arts Literacy or Mathematics. Instruction and support are provided in the basic concepts and skills that students need in order to be successful in their classroom. The Academic Intervention program aims to strengthen literacy and math skills of our grades 1-8 students who are not meeting grade level expectations.

Identifying Students for Academic Intervention

Students who fall in the bottom 10% of their grade level in Mathematics & English Language Arts are identified for possible inclusion into Academic Intervention using multiple measures. These measures include scores on the NJSLA, District Unit Assessments, DRA scores, and or Pre-requisite skills tests. Students identified for Academic Intervention are significantly lagging in their performance on these assessments - they fall three or more levels below average in two or more of these measures.

Students who qualify for Academic Intervention benefit by getting extra help and time to develop skills and strategies that their peers may have already. Confidence and self-esteem is often increased as students learn to apply new strategies and skills in their daily work.

Instructional Methods

Students who qualify for the Academic Intervention program will receive targeted instruction to strengthen academic skills. Academic Intervention teachers incorporate a variety of teaching methods and research proven effective strategies, as well as materials to supplement classroom instruction. This may include small group instruction in or out of the classroom as well as collaborative teaching.

The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System(LLI) is an intensive, small-group, supplementary literacy intervention for students who find reading and writing difficult. The goal of LLI is to lift the literacy achievement of students who are not achieving grade-level expectations in reading.

SOAR

The Supporting Ongoing Achievement Responsively (SOAR) learning series provides educators an opportunity to explore topics related to supporting students as they solidify their areas of unfinished learning, while making use of the IFL's SOAR materials. The SOAR materials comprise two main parts: math survey and instructional materials. The SOAR survey and materials can be used at all levels of tiered support.

Academic Intervention begins once students have been identified and screened.

Academic Intervention typically lasts 12 weeks and then they are reevaluated to be exited or for an additional 12 week plan. If a a student is exited from the program, the parent or guardian is consulted with the details. Classroom teachers and/or Academic Intervention teachers may recommend that students continue to receive services the following school year. A student will not automatically be enrolled in Academic Intervention for the following year.

Literacy at Home

It is imperative that parents read daily and with their children at home. Please take the time to enjoy the book with your child. Reviewing with your child while reading the book is a way to enjoy. Discussions about books can include elements of the story (character, setting, problem, solution), connections to your own life or another book, and what you are thinking while you are reading (we call this "thinking out loud").

Practice basic math skills with your child three to four times a week such as addition and subtraction with regrouping, telling time, elapsed time, counting money and or multiplication.
Buy math games, flash cards, fake money and S.T.E.M. activities that solve problems and are fun to do as a family.
Practice math strategies with your child every chance you get. Let them pay for groceries, build things with them to practice measure and bake together. Math is everywhere in your everyday lives.
Try to make sure you look in their folder to see what they are doing you may be able to help them with some things even if you teach it to them the way you remember learning it; all strategies help a child master math skills.
