MANGROVES

  • Mangrove forests are a group of trees and shrubs that live in the coastal intertidal zone.

The causes for depletion:

  1. Dredging

  • Urban Development

  • Water Pollution

  • Global Warming

  • Floods

  • Hurricanes

Mangroves act as blue carbon ecosystems.

Consequences after depletion:

  • Loss of habitat

  • Flooding

  • Some animals might become endangered

  • Increase in carbon dioxide

  • Air Pollution

  • Imbalance of biodiversity

  • Red tide algae blooms and kills the aquatic life

OUR SOLUTION

We have made this program using python as coding language . Our programme mostly works to monitor the quality of the mangrove forests.

Our program detects the green , blue and grey colours in the image which is given for processing and through that we come to know about the health of the mangroves in that particular area and then it can detect the possibilities of floods due to the depletion of mangroves in that particular region.

Users can upload the image along with the latitude and longitude of that place, so our program will detect the quality of the area and save it in the database in an excel file.

We have a website for spreading awareness and it is linked to our program.

OUR SOLUTION

In our program we have added an algorithm which detects the colour in the picture which is given to processed. according to the ratio of green , blue and grey colour in the picture it detects the quality of the mangroves of the given region.

1)The Green colour indicates percentage of greenery in the mangroves.

--if Green>=50% :Healthy mangroves

2)The blue colour indicates the present of water in the forest

--if blue>=50%:Presence of water in the forest,High Tide,Low Tide,Flood

3)The Grey colour indicates the presence of pollution in the forest

--if Grey>=50%:Polluted mangrove,presence of large number of pollutants

Our code will help for:

    • Storing the data about the particular mangrove and help analyse the rate of depletion or restoration .

    • Identifying the blue carbon sink area.

    • Identifying high risk areas for floods.

    • Identifying the rate of loss of habitat and aquatic life at the coastal area.

    • Identifying the rate at which air pollution is occurring in the mangrove area

    • Analysing the quality of soil around the mangrove areas.
