Welcome

As a volunteer you play a significant role in the work of our schools and form part of the Catholic School community. You have an important role in shaping a safe learning environment.  This module will introduce you to privacy and confidentiality obligations as a volunteer in the Diocese of Townsville. 

The module will only take about 10 minutes to complete and there will be some questions at the end to test your understanding of expectations.

While you are working as a volunteer you may receive or overhear confidential information regarding students, staff or other volunteers. Any personal information you receive must be kept confidential. This is a legal requirement.

Discussing information you have received during your volunteer role with staff, students, family, friends or other volunteers, inside or outside the school, is not acceptable.

Confidentiality requirements apply to the use of social media and email.

Upon becoming a valuable member of our team, you will develop relationships with students, staff and other volunteers within the school community.

These relationships must respect privacy and child protection boundaries at all times.

  • Do not send or accept friend requests from students on any social media platform. Do not engage with students on any social media platform.
  • Do not share information about other persons inappropriately. 
  • Privacy laws protect personal information (which includes photographs and video footage) about volunteers, students and staff.

You may need to be told specific details about a child to enable you to carry out your volunteer role.

We will only provide information that is necessary for your role.

Not all volunteers you are working with may need to be aware of this information.

Therefore, this information needs to be treated as private and confidential.
