Grade-Level Specific Roadmaps

These grade-specific parent roadmaps explain to parents what their child will be studying in the coming year and share strategies that parents can employ to facilitate learning outside of the classroom. These roadmaps are a great way to begin bridging the gap between the way math was once taught and today’s techniques.

Parent Roadmaps Include:

A statement that quickly explains why it is important that we begin making shifts in mathematics teaching and learning
The key concepts that students will be working on throughout the school year.
Ways that parents can create a parent/teacher partnership, including ideas of questions to ask their child’s teacher
A brief example of how one skill/concept progresses over multiple grade levels.
Examples of problem types, strategies students will be using, and different visual models.
Ideas for how they can help their child outside of school

Math Night Resources - Sample Problems

We know that parents didn’t learn math the way their children are learning it with Eureka Math. One way to get them onboard and comfortable helping their children is by hosting a family math night.

The “Math Night Resource” pack on Great Minds includes:

Handouts (a letter introducing parents to Eureka, sample problems, resource postcard, and more)
Family math night invitation and follow-up templates
A sample math night evaluation form
A powerpoint template
Tips for how to host a successful math night

At the beginning of the school year teachers will be particularly interested in the “Sample Problems” document (shown on the slide)

You will receive many questions from parents asking why their child needs to learn more conceptual math and multiple strategies for solving problems. Some parents suggest that simply learning the traditional method for solving a math problem (e.g., 2 + 2 = 4 or 6 × 8 = 48) is enough. Students do need to learn traditional methods for computation. Often, they’re the best tool for the job. However, sometimes students need more options—they need more tools in their toolbox. If students learn multiple math strategies, not only can they solve more kinds of problems more efficiently, but they also gain a deeper understanding of mathematics and how to use it in daily life.

The three examples on the “Sample Problems” shows parents how number bonds, tape diagrams and visualizing fractions may provide students with more efficient ways of solving problems.

You may want to use this particular document at the beginning of the year/ Back to School Night to show the efficiency of the number bond and tape diagram models that students will be using, or you may want to use this resource at a parent math night.
