Tityarith “Rith” Bun Host Club Leader of Rotary Club Sangke Battambang for Global Grant on clean water project meets with Soeur Community leadership to update them on Global Grant progress

This GG supports the establishment of a solar powered borehole well and sanitation education for residents of a rural village Soeur in western Cambodia near the border with Thailand. All of the water sources currently in the community test positive for contamination with E.coli, found in animal and human excrement. The GG supports the training of a Safe Water Committee [SWC] of community members to set up the business of clean water distribution to the school and community members. Fees collected by the SWC will support sustainability of cost of operating the water system, clean water distribution and future parts/repairs. – Susan Cooksey

This application was approved. However the World Fund ran out of money for last year before it could be funded.

We are trailblazing the first ever Emergency Medical Services solution for Nepal, where over 80 percent of Nepali citizens live in rural or remote areas with limited to no access to medical services. It’s not practical to expect to build paved roads and clinics in every rugged Himalayan community; however, we can train responders in these remote areas and save lives.

Typically, if there is a medical emergency or accident outside the city, patients are carried to a local healer or loaded onto a passing truck. Because Nepal lacks an Emergency Medical Services framework, the majority of ambulances in the country are essentially akin to “jeep taxis” without equipment or basic operator training.

Our work consists of establishing an Emergency Medical System Dispatch Center at Dhading District Hospital, Nepal. The system would use a common phone number, similar to the United States 9-1-1 emergency number, and utilize the Beacon Dispatcher and Responder system developed by Trek Medics. The project includes training and equipping additional Rural First Responders. – Paula Radich

This is an example of an immediate need met within three weeks. Through her connection with the Kathmandu Club on two Global Grants, Laura Tilrico became aware of the great need for oxygen in the local hospitals. Through the DISC the call went out to clubs to regarding the need and the ability of the Kathmandu club to acquire the O2 concentrators at reduced cost. This project also shows how individual Rotarians step up in a big way quickly to help others. We raised the funds were raised in less than three weeks. The Kathmandu club put the Rotary logo on every concentrators. They bought from several countries and had to get quality, price, and arrange the logistics in a very short period of time. Clubs in Australia and Denmark also participated. They raised $44M and bought 54 concentrators. Then arranged and made the deliveries around Nepal. How many lives were saved? Who knows?

Four years ago, the district TRF and IS committees set a goal to use all our DDF and to increase the number of clubs involved in international service. The Global Grants committee identified members experienced in Global Grants and invited them to help coach clubs who wanted to do projects. The IS committee focused on increased communication and opportunities to collaborate with other clubs, sharing success stories and providing education in writing, implementing, and evaluating projects. We have increased the number of clubs involved from 30% to over 50% and would have spent all but $6,000 our DDF and carryover if the World Fund hadn’t run out of money to match our grants.
